Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises Day 2024; June 27th.

FORUM: "MSMEs and the SDGs." Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises Day 2024. Micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises are the lifeblood of every community and key drivers of sustainable development at local level. For them to succeed and gain access to the global economy they need to be future-ready through the adoption of new technologies, sustainable and innovative practices and resilient strategies to navigate today’s economic landscape and seize emerging opportunities. As we commemorate the 2024 International MSME Day, we are just six years away from the 2030 deadline to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and progress is lagging. Many countries continue to face a range of unique and interconnected development challenges that include a cost-of-living crisis, constrained fiscal space, obstacles to accessing new sources of development and climate financing, and conflicts. Economic, social and environmental challenges are compounding mounting poverty and hunger. The 2024 MSME Day offers an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas on how key stakeholders, including policy makers, large companies, financial institutions, and the international community can support micro-, small and medium-sized businesses to advance the 2030 Agenda and contribute to achieving the SDGs, including poverty eradication and decent work for all.

Leveraging the Power and Resilience of Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) to Accelerate Sustainable Development and Eradicate Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises

Statement from the United Nations Secretary-General on Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day 2024; June 27th.

Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises are central to economies around the world.

Today, we recognize their vital contributions in creating jobs, driving economic growth, and empowering women, youth and marginalized communities.

This year’s theme focuses on the role of these enterprises in eradicating poverty and achieving the Sustainable Developing Goals. In times of crises – from cost-of living to climate change to debt distress – micro, small and medium-sized enterprises have demonstrated remarkable resilience.

Yet many continue to face limited access to finance, technology, markets and supply chains. These enterprises require policies, support structures and investments that promote their growth and formalization – and, in turn, help communities prosper, uplift the most vulnerable, and pave the way for more sustainable and just livelihoods.

As we celebrate Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to strengthen our support to these entities, accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and leave no one behind.

United Nations Secretary-General.

EVENT: At UNHQ New York On June 27th, from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM EDT, Conference Room 5, a plenary session entitled ''Leveraging the Power and Resilience of Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) to Accelerate Sustainable Development and Eradicate Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises.'' will explore ways that MSMEs, a sector that represents over 90% of all businesses globally, can meaningfully contribute innovative solutions to the challenges of our time and drive forward inclusive growth and shared prosperity. MSMEs, which account for 90% of businesses, more than 70% of employment, and 50% of GDP worldwide, remain the core of the economy for most societies. A human-centered approach is central to the evolving 'circular economy,' emphasizing the importance of individuals and communities in driving sustainable transformation. WORKSHOP: United Nations International MSMEs Day: Trade for Climate Change.

This workshop, organized by UN Trade and Development, the International Council for Small Business, and other partners, will celebrate the International Day of MSMEs 2024. The sessions will discuss the role, potential, and challenges of MSMEs in contributing to achieving the SDGs and other internationally agreed-upon commitments, with a particular focus on the circular economy.

Participants will include international experts and representatives from all stakeholder groups.

A circular economy entails markets that give incentives to reusing products, rather than scrapping them and then extracting new resources. In such an economy, all forms of waste, such as clothes, scrap metal and obsolete electronics, are returned to the economy or used more efficiently. This can provide a way to not only protect the environment, but use natural resources more wisely, develop new sectors, create jobs and develop new capabilities.

“The goods of today are the resources of tomorrow at yesterday's resource prices.”

UNCTAD’s work on the circular economy started in 2015 with a collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation on resource-circularity potentials in large economies like India and China.

Circularity is already part of many lines of work within UNCTAD, such as activities on tackling fossil fuel and fisheries subsidies. Resource circularity cannot be promoted in international value chains just by promoting and enacting national rules. While companies have made strides in improving their social and environmental footprints, privatizing public policy through voluntary sustainability standards and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) falls short from this task. In a world where most trade happens in parts and components in highly globalized value chains, promoting global resource circularity goes through international rules and cooperation, as well as individuals and consumers empowered with education.

UNCTAD works on the circular economy by encouraging discussions and activities seeking to bring value out of waste streams, by encouraging discussions around collaborative economy sectors, by the examination of innovate business models and encouragement of consumer awareness and behavioural shifts. In partnership with other international organizations, UNCTAD’s work on the circular economy at the national and multilateral level brings this important theme to the service of the international community.

UNCTAD’s work on the circular economy contributes to the research and analysis published by The United Nations Economist Network.

International Day against Drug Abuse and illicit Trafficking 2024; June 26th.

FORUM: The evidence is clear: invest in prevention.International Day against Drug Abuse and illicit Trafficking 2024. The global drug problem presents a multifaceted challenge that touches the lives of millions worldwide. From individuals struggling with substance use disorders to communities grappling with the consequences of drug trafficking and organized crime, the impact of drugs is far-reaching and complex. Central to addressing this challenge is the imperative to adopt a scientific evidence-based approach that prioritizes prevention and treatment. The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking aims to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse. This year’s World Drug Day campaign recognizes that effective drug policies must be rooted in science, research, full respect for human rights, compassion, and a deep understanding of the social, economic, and health implications of drug use. Together, let us amplify our efforts to combat the global drug problem, guided by the principles of science, compassion, and solidarity. Through collective action and a commitment to evidence-based solutions, we can create a world where individuals are empowered to lead healthy, fulfilling lives. Follow the conversations with the hashtags: #26june, #PutPeoplefirst #WorldDrugDay, #DrugPrevention, #worlddrugreport.

Statement from the United Nations Secretary-General on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2024; June 26th.

Drugs are at the root of immeasurable human suffering.

Drug use eats away at people’s health and wellbeing. Overdoses claim hundreds of thousands of lives every year.

Meanwhile, synthetic drugs are becoming more lethal and addictive, and the illicit drug market is breaking production records, feeding crime and violence in communities around the world.

At every turn, the most vulnerable people — including young people — suffer the worst effects of this crisis. People who use drugs and those living with substance abuse disorders are victimized again and again: by the drugs themselves, by stigma and discrimination, and by heavy-handed, inhumane responses to the problem.

As this year’s theme reminds us, breaking the cycle of suffering means starting at the beginning, before drugs take hold, by investing in prevention.

Evidence-based drug prevention programmes can protect people and communities alike, while taking a bite out of illicit economies that profit from human misery.

When I was Prime Minster of Portugal, we demonstrated the value of prevention in fighting this scourge. From rehabilitation and reintegration strategies, to public health education campaigns, to increasing investment in drug-prevention, treatment and harm-reduction measures, prevention pays off.

On this important day, let’s recommit to continuing our fight to end the plague of drug abuse and trafficking, once and for all.

On this important day, let’s recommit to continuing our fight to end the plague of drug abuse and trafficking, once and for all.

António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General.

This year’s World Drug Day is a call to:

  • Raise awareness: Increase understanding of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of evidence-based prevention strategies, emphasizing their impact on mitigating the harms of drug use.
  • Advocate for investment: Encourage greater investment in prevention efforts by governments, policymakers, and law enforcement professionals, highlighting the long-term benefits of early intervention and prevention.
  • Empower communities: Equip communities with the tools and resources to implement evidence-based prevention initiatives, fostering resilience against drug use and promoting community-led solutions.
  • Facilitate dialogue and collaboration: Promote dialogue and collaboration between stakeholders to enhance evidence-based prevention practices and policies, fostering a supportive environment for knowledge sharing and innovation.
  • Promote evidence-based policymaking: Advocate for evidence-based policymaking at the national and international levels, ensuring that drug policies are grounded in scientific research and informed by best practices.
  • Engage communities: Raise awareness about the importance of community engagement and participation in designing and implementing effective drug prevention programs, empowering communities to take ownership of prevention efforts.
  • Empower youth: Provide youth with the knowledge, skills, and resources to become agents of change in their communities, advocating for drug prevention initiatives and amplifying their voices in the conversation.
  • Promote international cooperation: Foster international cooperation and collaboration among governments, organizations, and communities to develop and implement evidence-based strategies for combating drug trafficking and organized crime, recognizing the global nature of the drug problem and the need for coordinated action.

PUBLICATION: Every year, UNODC issues the World Drug Report, full of key statistics and factual data obtained through official sources, a science-based approach, and research. This year’s report will be launched on June 26th.

Statement by the United Nations Secretary-General on International Day of the Seafarer 2024; June 25th.

The Day of the Seafarer is a time to celebrate and recognize the two million people around the world who operate the ships that carry more than 80% of the volume of world trade. Seafarers are vital in ensuring a seamless flow of essential goods that eventually make it into markets, homes, and onto our tables. Without them, the world would not be able to transport the large quantities of commodities that societies require to survive. But their own lives have been put on the line in the face of grave threats. Attacks on international shipping routes and acts of piracy are unacceptable. Ships and seafarers must not be held hostage and hijacked. Seafarers should not be collateral victims in wider geopolitical conflicts. Seafarers from across the globe provide a vital source of income to their families back home, while on long voyages at sea. Let us together salute them for their essential work and support their safety.

United Nations Secretary-General.

International Day of Women In Diplomacy 2024; June 24th.

FORUM:"Women’s Leadership in Multilateral Diplomacy." International Day of Women In Diplomacy 2024. In its resolution 76/269 of 20 June 2022, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 June of each year as the International Day of Women in Diplomacy. This significant day aims to celebrate the contributions of women to diplomacy and highlight challenges that prevent the equal participation of women at all levels of decision-making. It provides an opportunity for Member States, the UN system, other international and regional organizations, civil society, academic institutions, associations of women diplomats and other stakeholders to promote the full and equal participation of women at all levels of diplomacy through education and awareness-raising activities. Despite their undeniable contributions, women continue to face barriers and inequalities in leadership and decision-making spaces, including in diplomacy. The representation of women in key diplomatic roles, such as negotiators and mediators in peace processes, remains low. The International Day of Women in Diplomacy seeks to address those challenges and to emphasize the importance of women’s leadership in political decision-making processes. The second annual commemorative event to mark the International Day of Women in Diplomacy at the United Nations Headquarters in New York will bring together high-level government officials, diplomats, senior representatives of the UN system and other stakeholders. The event aims to facilitate interactive discussions and exchanges on the contributions, challenges and opportunities for women in diplomacy to catalyze change and transformation in multilateral affairs. Building on last year’s commemoration, the event will feature an informal discussion on ways to strengthen women’s leadership in multilateral organizations. Over the past year, women took the helm for the first time of several organizations in the UN system (IOM, ITU, WMO). At the same time, women continue to be underrepresented in leadership positions in all fields of diplomacy. According to a recent report published by GWL Voices, women lead only one third of multilateral organizations. Over the past 78 years, only 4 women served as Presidents of the General Assembly and only one out of Main Committee chairs is a woman during the current session of the Assembly. Furthermore, no woman has ever been appointed as Secretary-General of the United Nations. Against this background, the discussion will explore challenges and opportunities to strengthen women’s leadership in the multilateral arena.

EVENTS: On Monday, June 24th, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  at the Trusteeship Council Chamber, UN Headquarters, New York, the commemorative eventto mark the International Day of Women in Diplomacy 2024 under the theme ''Women’s Leadership in Multilateral Diplomacy'' will be held. International Day of Yoga 2024; June 21st.

FORUM: "Yoga for Self and Society.". International Day of Yoga 2024.Yoga is an invaluable gift of ancient Indian tradition. The word "Yoga" is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj meaning "to join", "to yoke" or "to unite", symbolizing the unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between human and nature, and a holistic approach to health and well-being. Yoga is known for disease prevention, health promotion and management of many life style related disorders.  Yoga, a transformative practice, represents the harmony of mind and body, the balance between thought and action, and the unity of restraint and fulfillment. It integrates the body, mind, spirit, and soul, offering a holistic approach to health and well-being that brings peace to our hectic lives.
