International Day of Parliamentarism 2023; June 30th.

FORUM: ‘‘Parliaments for the Planet.’’ International Day of Parliamentarism 2023. This year, with time rapidly running out to keep global warming under 1.5 degrees as stipulated in the Paris Agreement, the IPU’s main focus is climate action. That's why, we recently launched the IPU campaign Parliaments for the Planet designed to mobilize parliaments and parliamentarians to act on the climate emergency. The concept of the campaign is simple. Climate action begins at home. Parliaments and parliamentarians must lead by example before preaching to the people. The campaign is made up of two parts:

  1. My parliament! Part 1 of the campaign encourages parliaments and those who work in them to reduce carbon footprint and become greener.

  2. My planet! Overlapping with Part 1 of the campaign, Part 2 helps parliaments step up action through legislation, budgets and, in particular, scrutiny of government measures to implement the Paris Agreement on climate especially in the lead-up to COP28 in November.

Follow the conversations with the hashtags: #Parliaments4thePlanet, #Parliamentarians, #30june, #ParliamentarismDay.

Micro, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (MSME) Day 2023; June 27th.

FORUM: Galvanizing MSMEs Worldwide by Supporting Women and Youth Entrepreneurship and Resilient Supply Chains. Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises Day 2023. This MSMEs day will also focus on supporting resilient supply chains to ensure workers and the environment benefit. Supply chains are a critical component of global trade and commerce, and conflicts, disasters, and pandemics can quickly impact their functioning, increasing costs and making transactions more difficult. Therefore, policymakers and businesses must join forces to ensure economically viable, socially, and environmentally sustainable supply chains. Follow the conversations with the hashtags: #smallbusinesses, #27June, #MSMEday, #MSMEs.

EVENTS: Join the all-day celebrations of the Micro-, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises Day 2023 at the United Nations Headquarters on Tuesday, 27 June 2022, from 09:30-17:30 EST and 15:30-23:30 CEST.

Panel discussion 1: Galvanizing MSMEs Worldwide by Supporting Women and Youth Entrepreneurship and Resilient Supply Chains. Multiple simultaneous shocks and crises have disturbed the global working environment for entrepreneurs and micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). In addition, conflicts, commodity dependence, geopolitical tensions, and pandemics drive social and economic instability, making MSMEs extremely vulnerable to rising inflation and supply chain disruptions. Among the most vulnerable, women- and youth-owned enterprises are often at risk of external shocks. This is when the percentage and overall number of business formations by women and youth are increasing worldwide. However, facing limited access to affordable finance, capacity-building support, partnership networks, and global markets, women and young entrepreneurs need help to overcome the numerous challenges that frequently stifle the growth of their businesses, confining many of them to informality or necessity entrepreneurship. Policies that strengthen capacities and support MSMEs development and entrepreneurship for women and youth need to be at the forefront to address those challenges, lower and remove barriers, and provide an operating environment for women- and youth-owned businesses to grow, thus contributing to the full achievement of SDGs 1, 4, 5, 8, 9, 10 and the "leave no one behind" promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals.

Panel discussions 2: Resilience and Rebuilding: MSMEs for Sustainable Development at the forefront of building back better and stronger from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, Climate crisis and Conflicts. Entrepreneurs' adaptability and resilience have aided in responding to economic shocks, increasing the participation of women, youth and other disadvantaged groups part in the local, national and global economy. The event will feature micro-, small and medium-sized enterprises, including women and youth-led social start-ups, alongside global leaders to highlight progress, gaps and challenges that MSMEs and entrepreneurs continue to encounter, undermining their contributions to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the SDGs. Register to participate , download the programme and watch the livestream on UN Web TV.

International Day in Support of Victims of Torture 2023; June 26th.

FORUM: "Can We end Torture?International Day in Support of Victims of Torture 2023.

Nearly four decades on from the adoption of the United Nations Convention against Torture, there is evidence that it is still taking place in all regions of the world, even though it’s a recognized international crime. Listen to independent human rights experts Claude Heller and Suzanne Jabour – the chairpersons of the United Nations Committee against Torture, and the Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture – as they attempt to convince countries to end the practice. Let's strengthen our efforts to prevent all kind of acts of torture. Follow the conversations with the hashtags: #Torture #26june, #AgainstTorture, #TorturevictimsDay.

The United Nations has repeatedly acknowledged the important role played by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the fight against torture. In addition to lobbying for the establishment of United Nations instruments and monitoring mechanisms, they have made a valuable contribution to their enforcement. Individual experts, including the Special Rapporteur on torture and the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, and treaty monitoring bodies such as the Committee against Torture rely heavily on information brought to their attention by NGOs and individuals.

On June 26th, the OHCHR, the United Nations Committee against torture, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Special Rapporteur on Torture and other degraded treatments invite you join the Panel discussion to mark the 36 anniversary of the convention and the International Day in support for the Victims of torture 2023 will be held at UNHQ in New York and Geneva.

CAMPAIGN: Together we can ensure life changing services reach torture survivors.

ACTIVITIES: Contribute to help victims of torture and to save more lives; Already 53,000 lives transformed in 2023.
-21,000 survivor whose needs could not be met through project funding.
-53,000 assisted through project today.

International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2023; June 26th.

FORUM:People first: Stop Stigma and Discrimination, Strengten Prevention.International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2023. This year’s the United Nations International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking focuses on the need to put people first by ending stigma and discrimination and strengthening prevention. This means stressing rehabilitation, rather than punishment and incarceration for minor drug offences. Over time, the regular or habitual use of drugs becomes a crutch and only adds to the stress. Drugs can also cause other harms, including:

  • Cocaine: Highly addictive, cocaine is involved in nearly one in five overdose deaths; its health effects include asthma, bowel decay, and increased risk of HIV.

  • Methamphetamine (Meth): Meth causes devastating health effects, and sometimes death, even on the first try. Meth speeds up the body’s systems to dangerous levels. Chronic users experience anxiety, confusion, insomnia, paranoia, aggression, and more.

  • Prescription and illicit opioids: Highly addictive, the substances are the top cause of overdose deaths; health effects include confusion, nausea, constipation, coma, and brain damage.

  • Marijuana: Even though it is legal in many states, studies link marijuana use to various negative outcomes.

Statement from the United Nations Secretary-General on International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2023, June 26th.

Tens of millions of people suffer from drug-use disorders. Less than one fifth are in treatment. Drug users are doubly victimized: first by the harmful effects of the drugs themselves, and second by the stigma and discrimination they face.

People who use drugs can often face significant barriers to treatment and even health services for infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. Meanwhile, drug traffickers continue to prey on drug users, rapidly escalating the production of dangerous, highly addictive synthetic drugs.

This year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking focuses on the need to put people first by ending stigma and discrimination and strengthening prevention. This means stressing rehabilitation, rather than punishment and incarceration for minor drug offences.

It means upholding the human rights of people who use drugs, including by expanding prevention and treatment programmes and health services. It means protecting people and communities alike by ending impunity for drug traffickers profiting from people’s pain.

Above all, it means Governments leading the way. When I was Prime Minister of Portugal, we implemented non-criminal responses to drug possession for personal use, while cracking down on traffickers and re-allocating resources to prevention, treatment and harm-reduction measures.

As a result, drug consumption and associated infectious disease rates plummeted, more drugs were seized by police and customs, and — most importantly — lives were saved. Today, Portugal has one of Europe’s lowest overdose and death rates from drug use. As a global community, let’s continue our work to end drug abuse, illicit trafficking, and the stigma endured by drug users around the world.

Statement by the United Nations Secretary-General on United Nations Public Service Day 2023. June 23rd.

Today, on United Nations Public Service Day, we pay tribute to the women and men around the world who are answering the highest call: public service.

This year’s celebration arrives at the half-way point towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Public servants and the institutions they support will be increasingly critical as the world accelerates action towards the Sustainable Development Goals, which are badly off track.

Technology must be at the heart of this acceleration. Every day, new technologies emerge that hold the potential to change the way we live and work. When harnessed by an informed, skilled and equipped public service, technology can improve the reach and effectiveness of public services, while driving progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

As we mark this important day, let us celebrate the work of public servants worldwide, and find new ways to apply innovation to our work to shape a better, more sustainable future for all people.

U.N. Secretary-General.
