The United Nations has proclaimed May 22nd as International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. When first created by the Second Committee of the United Nations General Assembly in late 1993, 29 December (the date of entry into force of the Convention of Biological Diversity), was designated.

Statement of the U.N. Secretary-General on the International Day for Biological Diversity 2024; May 22nd.

The world’s complex web of biological diversity sustains all life on earth. Yet it is unravelling at alarming speed – and humanity is to blame.

We are contaminating land, oceans, and freshwater with toxic pollution, wrecking landscapes and ecosystems, and disrupting our precious climate with greenhouse gas emissions. Decimating biodiversity damages sustainable development today, and creates a dangerous and uncertain tomorrow.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework offers a pathway to reverse loss and restore biodiversity – while creating jobs, building resilience, and spurring sustainable development.

Governments must lead. But as this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity reminds us, we are all “Part of the Plan” – we all have a role to play. Indigenous Peoples, business, financial institutions, local and regional authorities, civil society, women, young people, and academia must work together to value, protect and restore biodiversity in a way that benefits everyone.

As we mark this Day for Biological Diversity, let us commit to be Part of the Plan. Let us act urgently to put biodiversity on a path to recovery. And let us build ambition to CBD COP16 in October to protect the planet and create a more sustainable future for us all.

United Nations Secretary-General.

International Day for Biological Diversity 2022; May 22nd.

FORUM: "Building a shared future for all life." is the slogan of the May 22nd; International Day for Biological Diversity 2022. The slogan was chosen to continue building momentum and support for the #post2020 global biodiversity framework to be adopted at the upcoming UN Biodiversity Conference (#COP15).

Action oriented and fitting within the context of the ongoing United Nations Decade on Restoration, which highlights that biodiversity is the answer to several sustainable development challenges, the slogan conveys the message that biodiversity - from ecosystem-based approaches to climate and/or nature-based solutions to climate, health issues, food and water security and sustainable livelihoods- is the foundation upon which we can build back better. The slogan builds on the momentum generated in 2020 and 2021 in support of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, due to be adopted at part two of the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP-15) in Kunming, China, later this year. With the world continuing to grapple with the pandemic,

International Day for Biological Diversity 2021, May 22nd.

More than ever before, we are aware of the effects of our unsustainable consumption and production on the natural world that sustains us and all life on this planet. We are using up the equivalent of 1.6 earths to maintain our current way of life and this cannot go on.

UNEP supports local, national and global action to end biodiversity loss; it supports countries to monitor and manage their biodiversity, amplifies scientific warnings of the effect humans are having on ecosystems and biodiversity, works with business and investment to drive nature-positive investments and encourages decision-makers to view nature as an asset.

This is a critical year for biodiversity. The UN Biodiversity Conference, rescheduled to take place in October in China, offers an opportunity to ensure we take better care of the natural systems that sustain all life on this planet.

The Conference, known as COP15, will be the biggest biodiversity summit in a decade and aims to agree on a new set of goals for nature over the next decade through the Convention on Biological Diversity post-2020 framework process.

World Environment Day on June 5 marks the official launch of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, a 10-year drive to galvanize all sectors of global society to become part of #GenerationRestoration and halt and reverse the degradation of our life-support systems.

Ahead of the launch of the UN Decade, keep up-to-date on everything related to biodiversity with UNEP’s Spotlight on nature and biodiversity.

FORUM: We are part of the solution for nature - International Biodiversity Day 2021, Join #GenerationRestoration.

What is the United Nations Environmeng Programme (UNEP) doing to support biodiversity? Inger Andersen, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and UNEP Executive Director, answers this and more in her 2021 video message for the International Day for Biological Diversity, which happens every 22nd of May. “The challenges we face on the planet are so acute that we don’t have the luxury of waiting for someone else to step up and take action. We are all part of the solution.”
This is UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen’s message ahead of the International Day for Biological Diversity on May 22.
