International Day for Biological Diversity 2026; May 22nd.

International Day for Biological Diversity 2026.

FORUM
: “Acting locally for global impactInternational Day for Biological Diversity 2026. The IDB is not only a celebration of nature. It constitutes a universal moment to demonstrate that the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) is underway. In the lead-up to COP 17 – which will be held under the theme of “Taking Action for Nature” – the IDB 2026 campaign will help connect local initiatives with the 23 global targets of the KMGBF, focusing the world’s attention on the importance of applying the whole-of-society approach adopted within the Framework (Section C). Applying the whole-of-society approach includes ways to enlist, enable, empower and leverage contributions of actors other than national governments: indigenous peoples and local communities, sub-national governments, cities and other local authorities, women and youth groups, businesses and financial institutions, and other civil society groups, among others. Success in halting and reversing biodiversity loss hinges on the world’s ability to leverage the vital tapestry of local action in support of government-led actions. It is a two-way street:
governments are expected to create enabling environments that are conducive to inclusive and meaningful participation of all actors in planning and implementation, including by ensuring access to information pertaining to the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs)—the master documents translating the global ambition of the KMGBF into measurable national undertakings.
Actors other than national governments are expected to seize all opportunities to contribute to planning and implementation, including by taking part in existing government-led processes and consultations, and by taking initiatives and actions aligned with the KMGBF, with the NBSAP and national targets serving as a guide.

Objectives
• to bolster public awareness of the centrality of biodiversity to all life on Earth, including by highlighting the impacts of biodiversity loss on local economies, societies and livelihoods.
• to make the invisible visible, by showcasing local actions and initiatives that are driving the implementation of the KMGBF forward.
• to build momentum toward the 2026 United Nations Biodiversity Conference ahead of the first global review of collective progress in the implementation of the KMGBF.

While governments that adopted the KMGBF at COP 15 are in the driver’s seat, collective progress in implementation depends on the mosaic of local efforts carried out by everyone. The world needs a surge of inclusive, participatory and impactful whole-of-society action, including through local mobilization for the implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans. Increased attention and support must be devoted to supporting local action, so that capacity and funding gaps impeding progress can be overcome.

EVENTS

EVENTS: on May 22nd; The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) 2026 will be celebrated to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on 22 May 1992; and  to provide an opportunity to foster wide support for the implementation of the Convention, its Protocols and related action frameworks. The participant are invited to reflect on the theme of the 2026 edition of IDB “Acting locally for global impact”. For different segments of societies and the general public, the 2026 International Biodiversity Day campaign is articulated around three pillars: Look and Learn, Connect and Act, and Share. Look and Learn: Members of the public all over the world are encouraged to “look” by exploring the many facets of biodiversity at the local level and seeking ways to undertake biodiversity action within their communities and through context-appropriate forums at the local level. Members of the public are also invited to “learn” or enhance their understanding of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the KMGBF as the world’s blueprint to halt and reverse biodiversity loss – including reports and contributions that have been made by Parties and actors other than national governments. These resources will be available on CBD and International Day for Biological Diversity websites, including the Online Reporting Tool
Connect and Act: Members of the public are encouraged to find out and join in what others are doing, nearby or online. These efforts could aim to strengthen data collection, knowledge exchange and collaboration across levels of governance at the community-level, online or in person.
Share: All are invited to share their actions and learnings with others.
To celebrate the day, actions can range from organizing information sessions on national targets and NBSAPs, community walks and gardens, photography and drawing competitions, citizen science, advocating for local actions and increasing information-gathering. Register to participate!

2026 Biodiversity Art Exhibition - Acting Locally for Global Impact

The Biodiversity Art Exhibition is an awareness-raising activity about biodiversity matters through unconventional means. It began in 2021 as a virtual exhibit, during the global pandemic and was a way to reach audiences widely and both highlight and support our talented local artists during those challenging times.
From then and every year since, pieces are chosen that best reflect the theme of International Biodiversity Day of that year. Like biodiversity, visual art expressions are varied and those showcased includes painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, mixed media and more. We can see a snapshot of a moment through the artists' eyes.
Along with the virtual exhibition, there will be an in-person exhibition, for the 2nd year running, that will be held at the Norman Centre in Bridgetown, St. Michael. It will be launched on IDB and last throughout the month of June which is celebrated nationally as Environment Month. Opening hours: 9am-5pm on Mondays-Saturdays.

You’re invited to a creative collaboration of the BiodiversityDesign.org initiative — where cuisine meets conservation. Each bite becomes part of a culinary adventure that re-imagines how we nourish the planet, together by choosing over plentiful ingredients. Eat the Invaders is an evening for lovers of food and nature showcasing how people can support sustainable foods and re-balance human damaged ecosystems while eating like royalty.

What’s on the menu? Invasive or over-abundant edible species like.. Sea urchin, venison, rabbit, Manila clam, blackberry, burdock, dandelion, stinging nettle, European green crab, bamboo, Japanese knotweed, invasive seaweed, Pacific oyster.

Biodiversity Stripes Challenge

As part of Sustainability Month 2026, we’re excited to launch the Biodiversity Stripes Challenge, a creative opportunity to explore and showcase biodiversity in your local environment.
'Biodiversity stripes' provide a visual representation of the change in biodiversity over time, to show the levels of decline since 1970. The highest level of biodiversity is coloured bright green. Lower levels of decline are shown through yellow to grey colours, and greater declines are shown by darker greys.

Eastern Civilization Communication Project: Origins Exploration Action

The Eastern Civilization Communication Project traces the origins of Eastern civilizational wisdom and shares it with the world. Its Origins Exploration Action investigates how ancient Eastern philosophies — harmony between humanity and nature, and following nature's way — contain ecological knowledge essential for modern biodiversity conservation. On IDB 2026, the Project launches a global inquiry: researchers and community leaders across Asia will document traditional ecological practices, map indigenous species knowledge, and trace the civilizational roots of conservation ethics. Findings will be compiled into a public report demonstrating that Eastern ecological wisdom is not historical artifact but actionable knowledge for the KMGBF, directly embodying the 2026 theme "Acting locally for global impact." International Youth Environmental Journalists Forum & Launch of the Green Information Integrity Initiative

This hybrid forum addresses a critical but overlooked dimension of the 2026 IDB theme "Acting locally for global impact": local biodiversity actions cannot achieve global influence without credible, verifiable information infrastructure. Two initiatives will be launched: (1) Youth Eco-Journalist Growth Program, training young reporters to cover biodiversity stories with verified data and digital verification skills under UNESCO MIL methodology; (2) Green Information Integrity Initiative, a commitment framework for media to combat environmental misinformation through fact-verification and source-attribution standards. The forum will produce a Declaration on Youth-Led Ecological Communication and Digital Integrity for submission to UN frameworks including UNESCO MIL Alliance and the Global Digital Compact. Eastern Civilization Communication Project: Sharing Traditional Ecological Wisdom on International Day for Biological Diversity

The Eastern Civilization Communication Project disseminates the wisdom of Eastern civilizations worldwide. On IDB 2026, it highlights the ecological dimension: the philosophy of harmony between humanity and nature and following nature's way. The KMGBF recognizes traditional knowledge as vital for biodiversity conservation, yet Eastern ecological philosophy remains underrepresented globally. Through WHMO's five-continent network, local branches will document traditional ecological practices, explore biodiversity wisdom in cultural heritage, and connect communities with global biodiversity goals — demonstrating that Eastern ecological knowledge is a living resource contributing to the 2026 theme "Acting locally for global impact."

Expansion of the protected area of a Sanctuary to include Coral Reefs

Colombia took a vital step for the conservation of the Caribbean Chocó and the Darién with the expansion of the Sanctuary of Wildlife and Flora in Acandí, Playón, Playona, including now San Francisco, and Cabo Tiburón. It is a protected area that is strategic for the preservation of sea turtles, coral reefs, mangroves, and other essential ecosystems located near the border between Colombia and Panama. The expansion adds almost 63,000 new hectares and allows the Sanctuary to now cover more than 89,000 hectares, from Cabo Tiburón, on the border with Panama, to the San Francisco area, south of the Gulf of Darién. The process responds to a long-standing demand from the local communities Councils Cocomanorte, Cocomaseco, and Cocomasur; and the Civil Society (Since 2008 Foundation ICRI Colombia, 2019 Mission Blue and 2023 International Coral Reef Observatory). The Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development has just signed in situ, the new resolution.

Biodiversity on wheels: Raising awareness through urban transport

On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026, I created and will present to the citizens of Kalamata, in collaboration with ASTIKO KTEL Kalamatas the first urban bus in the world that “speaks” about biodiversity loss.
The bus was wrapped with the “Biodiversity stripes”, a visual representation of biodiversity decline from 1970 to 2020, created by Professor Miles Richardson. The colours gradually transition from green to grey, symbolising the loss of wildlife species and ecosystems over time. The initiative aimed to bring biodiversity awareness directly into citizens’ daily lives through public transport. The bus also displayed scientific information based on the Living Planet Index, highlighting the dramatic decline in global wildlife populations over the past 50 years. Through this moving awareness campaign, public transport became a powerful tool for environmental education and climate communication.

Do for the Birds! Do for Life!

To mark the International Day for Biological Diversity, we are significantly expanding the range of bird conservation measures available at the research station: we are installing waterers, setting up additional birdhouses, and enhancing the daily lives of our feathered friends with bird baths and dust baths. But we haven’t forgotten the smallest creatures either: we’re building insect hotels, bat houses, and butterfly waterers, and increasing the biodiversity of the habitat is also a key priority: we are introducing new species to the research station’s grounds, expanding the native plant population, and planting species that particularly support our pollinators—such as flowers that bloom at night.

Conservation, Preservation and Regeneration of Native Wild fruits

Conservation, Preservation and Regeneration of Native Wild fruits

Native wild fruit plants are critical for preserving biodiversity, maintaining food security, and sustaining traditional knowledge (TK) systems. They carry genes that are more resistant to climate stressors, diseases, and pests than conventional commercial crops, highly nutrient-dense, containing rich amounts of vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, serve as vital food sources for local wildlife, pollinators, and seed-dispersing birds and mammals and have the potential for value-addition and processing. To protect them three primary methods namely In-situ Conservation, Ex-situ Conservation, and Processing and Value addition are significant. The knowledge gain from our documentation of these important local species, we know some of them are reduced to few population. While those species which are abundant, are under-utilized due to the lack of processing and value-addition. We must bridge these gaps.

Safeguarding Himalayan Salamanders through Innovative Habitat Restoration

The Himalayan salamander (Tylototriton himalayanus) breeds in small seasonal wetlands (pokhris) between 1,000–3,000 m in the Darjeeling Hills. Less than 10% of known sites lie within protected areas. Our work involves collecting data on present habitat parameters (water quality, vegetation, threats). Based on these results, we are converting one private land parcel into a micro sanctuary – reviving ponds, removing invasive plants, and creating a functional breeding site. A single pond can be the difference between survival and extinction.

Corridors of Coexistence: Acting Locally for Global Impact through Asian Elephant Conservation

In the foothills of North Bengal, ancient elephant migratory routes cut through tea gardens and fragmented forests, creating one of India’s most intense human elephant conflict zones. This event showcases our place-based conservation approach: extensive household surveys to map migration corridors and identify conflict hotspots, community biofencing as a non-lethal deterrence method, and coexistence frameworks centred on local communities. Restoring connectivity between protected areas reduces crop raids, property loss, and fatalities. True conservation builds a future where people and wildlife share the land safely.

Little Leaners at Muskaan ECCCs Protecting Sunderban Biodiversity

On 22 May 2026, SEED’s Muskaan Early Childhood Care Centres in Ghoramara and Sagar Islands will celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity by introducing children aged 2–6 years to the rich natural world around them.

Located in the climate-vulnerable Sundarbans a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ramsar Wetland; these islands are home to extraordinary biodiversity, including mangroves, birds, fish, dolphins, crocodiles, and the Royal Bengal Tiger. Yet rising sea levels, salinity intrusion, and climate change continue to threaten both the ecosystem and the communities living within it.

For the children growing up on these fragile islands, biodiversity is not just nature — it is life, protection, and survival.

The day will include nature walks, leaf art, storytelling on Sundarbans wildlife, seed planting, drawing activities, songs, rhymes, and discussions on “Our Island, Our Forest” to nurture curiosity, environmental awareness, and love for nature from an early age.

However, evidence obtained from fossils of ancient marine organisms suggests that the phenomenon of \"parasitism\" has existed for more than 400 million years. This session will explore the long history and evolutionary biodiversity of parasites, complementing the ongoing special exhibition, \"Parasites and Symbiosis.\"

Schedule:
- May 23: 11:00 AM & 3:00 PM
- May 24: 11:00 AM & 3:00 PM
(Each session is approx. 15 minutes. All sessions feature the same content.)

Festival of Biodiversity 2026

The Festival of Biodiversity 2026, a joint venture of Peshawar Zoo & WWF Pakistan, is a celebration that is all about how beautiful nature is and how we need to protect plants, animals, and the earth. This festival wants to teach people, students, and young folks that we all have to work together to take care of the earth and all the different kinds of animals and plants that live here.

The festival will have many things to do. For example, there will be a nature art contest where students from different institutions will make paintings and artwork that show how pretty nature is. People who come to the festival will also get to go on nature walks and listen to talks about animal biodiversity and how we can help protect them and their habitats.

The festival is a way to get people to care more about nature and want to help take care of it. It does this by teaching people things, letting them be creative, and getting the community involved.

National Seminar "Acting Locally for Global Impact"

Prioritizing native species, regulating invasive plants, improving nursery practices, and increasing public awareness can help ensure that greening efforts protect biodiversity rather than threaten it. Planting trees is an act of hope; planting the right trees is an act of wisdom. On, Pakistan’s plantation campaigns offer both hope and an important lesson. While tree planting is essential to combat climate change, pollution, and urban heat, experts warn that planting the wrong species can unintentionally harm local ecosystems. Research from Pakistan’s subtropical regions shows that many nurseries sell non-native plants introduced for landscaping and rapid growth. Though cities may appear greener, biodiversity can decline beneath the surface as native ecosystems weaken. Invasive plants may also consume excessive groundwater, damage agriculture, and become difficult to control. The solution is not to stop plantation drives, but to make them ecologically responsible.

World Biodiversity Day Hennops River Cleanup

If you want to make a difference, it starts with you.
Not someday. Not someone else. You.

On 30 May, we’re gathering at the Hennops Revival River Cleanup @Zwartkop Country Club to do something simple but powerful — show up for a river that can’t speak for itself anymore.

It’s easy to feel like the problem is too big, too polluted, too far gone. But change has never come from waiting. It comes from people who decide that “enough” is a starting point, not a stopping point.

This isn’t just about picking up litter. It’s about dignity. It’s about restoring something that’s been neglected. It’s about proving that small actions, done together, still matter.

If you’ve ever looked at a place and thought, “someone should fix this” — this is your moment to be that someone.

Come get your hands dirty. Come be part of the turnaround.

The Spring of Mountain Life

As part of our ongoing workshop series in Nuwara Eliya, this session at Kikiliyamana College celebrates International Day for Biological Diversity with students aged 12–14 and their teachers. The workshop explores how global environmental challenges connect directly to the landscapes, ecosystems, and species around them, with a special focus on the ecological richness of Sri Lanka’s central highlands.

Through interactive drama, creative activities, and storytelling, participants will explore biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human impacts in engaging ways. The workshop also highlights the endemic and endangered Rhino-horned Lizard, a remarkable species found within their own montane landscape, helping students recognise that biodiversity is part of the life around them and worth protecting.

The second half of the day focuses on nature journaling and biodiversity photography, encouraging students and teachers to slow down, observe, and connect more deeply with local biodiversity.

Survival of the [F]riendly

In honor of International Biodiversity Day on May 22, we are open sourcing an exclusive excerpt from the upcoming book on the “Evolution of the Biosphere” in celebration of the invisible heroes of all Biological Diversity: The Microbes.

For eons they have diligently been driving the evolution of life through friendly networks. It is thanks to their collaborative nature that we share this planet with crocodiles, fungi and oak trees. They are the teeny tiny building blocks for all Biological Diversity everwhere. And they never stop. Their factories work 24 seven, every day of the year, and for 3,5 billion years. That deserves some respect.

They are the ultimate system engineers.

This story is also a celebration of the fearless female scientist who dared to stand her ground until her mindblowing theory on serial endosymbiosis was eventually vindicated. The brave Lynn Margulis.

2026 Biodiversity Day Special Broadcast

“Acting locally for global impact”

As part of Biodiversity Day on 22 May, we are organizing a special live broadcast in which we will address biodiversity from different areas of expertise.

This year’s theme reminds us that biodiversity loss is a global crisis, but that solutions often begin at the local scale through knowledge, awareness, education, monitoring, conservation, and action.

In the panel, we will discuss biodiversity in the context of education, freshwater ecosystems, marine life, civil society initiatives, botany, herbaria, paleobiodiversity, and the global importance of Anatolia.

Anatolia is a unique geography where different biogeographical regions, high endemism, rich ecosystem diversity, and a strong evolutionary heritage converge. For this reason, every right step taken locally is also part of our global responsibility for biodiversity.

Statements

Biodiversity is the living web that sustains humanity.

Yet, climate chaos, pollution, and the relentless exploitation of land, ocean and freshwater, are pushing the natural world towards breakdown – with devastating consequences for people, livelihoods, and sustainable development.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework shows the way forward. But we must pick up the pace – with ambition and accountability.

Governments must lead by accelerating implementation, mobilizing finance, and closing capacity gaps that hold back progress. But as this year’s theme reminds us, success depends on action far beyond national capitals. Indigenous Peoples and local communities, women and young people, academia, businesses, cities and regions all have a vital role in protecting and restoring nature.

The United Nations is supporting Member States through inclusive, science‑based action – updating national biodiversity strategies, expanding protected areas, restoring ecosystems, and integrating nature into sustainable development planning and climate action.

On this International Day for Biological Diversity, let us champion those acting locally for global impact – and work together to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, so people and nature flourish together.

António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.
