Today, on United Nations Public Service Day, we pay tribute to the women and men around the world who are answering the highest call: public service.

This year’s celebration arrives at the half-way point towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Public servants and the institutions they support will be increasingly critical as the world accelerates action towards the Sustainable Development Goals, which are badly off track.

Technology must be at the heart of this acceleration. Every day, new technologies emerge that hold the potential to change the way we live and work. When harnessed by an informed, skilled and equipped public service, technology can improve the reach and effectiveness of public services, while driving progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

As we mark this important day, let us celebrate the work of public servants worldwide, and find new ways to apply innovation to our work to shape a better, more sustainable future for all people.

EVENTS:  Celebrating 20 years of Public Service Innovation for Sustainable Development and Inclusion - Marking the 20th anniversary of the UNPSA.

To bolster recognition of the Day and the value of public service, the United Nations established the United Nations Public Service Awards (UNPSA) programme; In 2023,  the United Nations Public Service Awards takes a break. As the UNPSA programme marks its 20th anniversary in 2023 and at the midway point to the year 2030, a comprehensive review of the UNPSA has been undertaken to assess the effectiveness of the programme and make necessary adjustments to better promote and disseminate innovations in the public sector. Today we celebrate the UNSPA and the 20 years of excellence in public service, showcasing global initiatives driving positive change. Let's be creative and achieve the Sustainable Development Goal together!

- 2023 Civil Society Townhall: Solutions for a Sustainable future through enhanced global cooperation.

The 3rd Civil Society Townhall entitled ''Solutions for a Sustainable future through enhanced global cooperation.'' will be held on June 27, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM (EDT) at ECOSOC Chamber, with the support of the Office of the president of the General Assembly, Department of Social and Economic and Social affairs, the United Nations Department of Global Communications  and the Office of the High Comissioner of Human Rights.

Building on the SDG Summit, the Summit of the Future in 2024 will be a key opportunity to reaffirm shared principles and advance practical solutions. As Member States embark on consultations on the scope and topics of the Summit of the Future, hearing questions and ideas from civil society will be important to inform those discussions. The Town Hall will serve as an opportunity for civil society to ask questions and to engage with the President of the General Assembly on issues including, but not limited to: 

• How can we strengthen the international community’s response to complex global shocks?  
• How can we deliver on our responsibilities to future generations yet to be born? How can youth engagement contribute to the discussion?
• How can the international community address the challenges and opportunities posed by rapid technological development, in particular in the area of AI, and ensure a just digital transition?
• How can the international community go beyond GDP as the primary measure of development and progress towards SDGs?
• What are the most important challenges to be addressed by the Summit of the Future? What role do you see for the Summit of the Future in the implementation of sustainability transformation at all levels?

This campaign seeks to highlight the value of public service, acknowledge the contributions of public servants, and inspire young individuals to pursue careers in the public sector. As the world faces pressing challenges and with only seven years to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, embracing innovation in the public sector becomes crucial for accelerating progress. The UNPSA rewards and honors the creative achievements and effective contributions of public institutions in enhancing public administration and supporting sustainable development worldwide.

 

International Widows Day 2023; June 23rd.

FORUM: "Let's work to ensure that widows of all ages, whatever their religion, ethnicity, caste, class, or nationality, are protected from discrimination, violence and poverty – thus enabling them to enjoy their full human rights as equal and valuable members of society." International Widows’ Day 2023. 

EVENTS: The UN-Women, the UNFPA, the OHCHR, the Civil society organizations and Non-governmental organizations will held a webinar on June 23rd to mark the International Widows’ Day 2023.

FACTS AND FIGURES

By 2015 at least 38 million widows globally were living in extreme poverty.

This number is now hugely increased by armed conflicts, migration, violent extremism, natural disasters, and epidemics of disease now including Covid-19. Widows suffering marginalisation and deprivation of assets may resort to begging, child labour, withdrawal of children from education, early or enforced marriage of children and prostitution – creating a cycle of disadvantage and poverty within future generations that threatens progress with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Widows are among the most vulnerable in conflict and post-conflict situations.

Sexual and gender-based violence towards widows, frequently exacerbated by religious and ethnic discrimination, is widespread in such situations and tends to persist even after conflict has ended. Frequently lacking death certificates or any information on their partners’ whereabouts, ‘half widows’ (partners of the missing or forcibly disappeared) are often unable to access pensions or compensation, to claim any rightful inheritance, or remarry.

Millions of widows suffer widespread stigma, discrimination and abuse.

In many countries widows are seen as a burden on society or even ‘ill-omened’, with consequent exclusion and abuse carried out by their own families and communities. Widows often suffer traditional prohibitions on dress, diet and social mobility, and can be subjected to ‘widow inheritance’ in which a widow is forcibly ‘passed on’ to a designated male such as her deceased husband’s brother. Even worse are the harmful traditional practices (HTPs) such as ritual ‘sexual cleansing’, where a widow is made to have unprotected sex with a male relation or even a non-relative.

United Nations Public Service Day, celebrated on 23 June each year, recognizes the value and virtue of public service to the community; highlights the contribution of public service in the development process; recognizes the work of public servants, and encourages young people to pursue careers in the public sector.

EVENTS:  2022 UN Public Service Day commemoration.

International Widows Day 2022; June 23rd.

 FORUM: Towards progress for widows. International Widows Day 2022.

The Day is an opportunity for action towards achieving full rights and recognition for widows – too long invisible, uncounted and ignored.

A dearth of reliable hard data remains one of the major obstacles to developing the policies and programmes to address the poverty, violence and discrimination suffered by widows. There is a need for more research and statistics disaggregated by marital status, sex and age, in order to help reveal the incidence of widow abuse and illustrate the situation of widows.

 Furthermore, Governments should take action to uphold their commitments to ensure the rights of widows as enshrined in international law, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Even when national laws exist to protect the rights of widows, weaknesses in the judicial systems of many States compromise how widows’ rights are defended in practice and should be addressed. Lack of awareness and discrimination by judicial officials can cause widows to avoid turning to the justice system to seek reparations. 

Programmes and policies for ending violence against widows and their children, poverty alleviation, education and other support to widows of all ages also need to be undertaken, including in the context of action plans to accelerate achievement of the Global Goals.

 In post-conflict situations, widows should be brought in to participate fully in peacebuilding and reconciliation processes to ensure that they contribute to sustainable peace and security. Empowering widows through access to adequate healthcare, education, decent work, full participation in decision-making and public life, and lives free of violence and abuse, would give them a chance to build a secure life after bereavement. Importantly, creating opportunities for widows can also help to protect their children and avoid the cycle of inter-generational poverty and deprivation.

The event, entitled, “Ending the World’s Silence on Widows: Opportunities for Leadership around the World,” will be held on Tuesday, June 21. During the event, the speakers, comprised of policymakers and gender advocates from around the world, will discuss opportunities to mainstream widows into social policies, human rights reporting, and business practices. Using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as its framework, the event aims to provide concrete and actionable recommendations across sectors in order to address the needs of widows suffering human rights violations and discrimination in certain parts of the world.

United Nations Secretary- general Ban Ki-moon message on the occasion of the International Widows' Day 2016, June 23th.

There are some 259 million widows around the world, and nearly half are living in poverty. Widows are often stigmatized by their families and communities. Many suffer discrimination based on age and gender. Some have lived lives marked by physical and sexual abuse.

 

Older widows often have few economic assets, after a lifetime of hard but unpaid work. Even in developed countries, the value of women’s pensions can be some 40 per cent lower than men’s. Younger widows face other challenges, as heads of households with childcare responsibilities and very limited economic opportunities.

 

The 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda with its pledge to leave no one behind has a particular resonance for widows, who are among the most marginalized and isolated. On International Widows’ Day, let us pledge to make widows more visible in our societies, and to support them in living productive, equal and fulfilling lives.

United Nations Secretary-General's Message for the United Nations Public Service Day 2016, June 23th.

On United Nations Public Service Day, we recognize and celebrate the role of public service in improving peoples’ lives.

The efforts of women and men engaged in public service are crucial to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Each Sustainable Development Goal is linked to the delivery of public service: from health to education … from safety to the rule of law … from water and energy to economic policies and beyond.

All countries and all people need a public service that is competent, equipped and well-resourced.  Public service needs to be diverse and ethical.  It needs to be dedicated to effectively serving people and improving the lives of the poorest and most vulnerable.

I pay tribute to public servants in all countries for their dedication to excellence.  I would like to offer a special word of recognition to the dedicated staff of the United Nations.  Across 10 years leading this noble organization, I marvel at their dedication and professionalism every single day.

Once again, thank you for your commitment.  Together, let us to create an environment where public service can flourish with creativity, innovation and a shared drive to realize the 2030 Agenda.

I am delighted to welcome you to this celebration of the United Nations Public Service Day.
The theme of this year’s celebration – Advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: Innovative Institutional Approaches and Public Service Delivery to Leave No One Behind - is timely and important, as we have begun the journey of translating the visionary, transformative and ambitious 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development into reality.
At the global level, the UN General Assembly is exploring how to ensure coherent and inclusive review and follow-up of the SDGs. Member States are close to agreement on a resolution that will provide a solid basis for moving ahead
.
The High-Level Political Forum is the central UN platform for follow-up and review of the Agenda 2030. It will deliver on its role next month. 22 countries will make voluntary presentations at the Forum on the steps they have taken to implement the Agenda. These 22 volunteering countries come from all regions and all levels of development, demonstrating the truly universal nature of the 2030 Agenda.

United Nations Secretary-General’s Message for the International Widow's Day 2015.

Creating a world with greater equality for generations to come is the defining challenge of our times. This is especially urgent for women, who often experience multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination. Their age, income, ethnicity, disabilities and other factors can put women at greater risk of injustice.
Widows are particularly vulnerable. Many are aging and may not have worked outside of the home. The death of their partner can leave them in precarious living conditions, particularly in areas of conflict, natural disaster and humanitarian crisis.
International Widows’ Day is an opportunity to assert the rights of those whose bereavement is followed by exclusion, abuse or the loss of homes, livelihoods and social standing.
In societies that view women as whole only when they are married, widows are often disregarded or stigmatized. Without the economic and social protection of their husbands, many widows are treated as financial burdens by their families. They may lose their rights to inheritance and property, or even be forced out of their communities.
These human rights violations stem from the unjust view that women have diminished value. On International Widows’ Day, we reassert the equality of men and women.
The United Nations is working on specific measures that can help widows, and I urge other partners to join these efforts.
We must erase the social stigmatization and economic deprivation that confronts widows; eliminate their high risk of sexual abuse and exploitation; and remove the barriers to resources and economic opportunities that constrain their future. We also must advance widows’ equal rights to inheritance, property, land and other assets.
On International Widows’ Day, let us resolve to end discriminatory attitudes and take action to ensure that widows of all ages enjoy equal human rights, including the right to shape their own future and to participate fully in society. This will be an essential element in realizing our vision of a life of dignity for all.

Theme 2015 : “Innovating Public Service Delivery to Implement the Post-2015 Development Agenda”.

United Nations Secretary-General's Message for the United Nations Public Service Day 2015.

Today we celebrate the dedication of public servants everywhere. We salute their tireless efforts to provide efficient and inclusive services that are available to all.
The world faces enormous social, economic and environmental challenges. Ensuring that our public services are accountable and that our public servants are fully able to rise to the moment is vital.
This is a year for concerted global action. United Nations conferences on financing for development in July, on adopting a new set of Sustainable Development Goals in September, and the Paris Conference on Climate Change in December can help generate momentum for strengthening leadership in public services.  As we transition from the Millennium Development Goals to the Sustainable Development Goals, Governments everywhere will need to adopt innovative and integrated approaches to promote policy change, institutional coordination, participatory decision-making, and effective, responsive, inclusive and accountable service delivery.
This year's United Nations Public Service Awards recognize that innovation and leadership contribute to better and more accountable services to local communities, including marginalized groups that are present at the commemoration of Public Service Day in Medellin, Colombia, the United Nations will recognize twenty-two public institutions for their achievements. 
On this Public Service Day, I thank all public servants for their daily efforts to make a difference. I also call upon young people everywhere to consider dedicating themselves to the noble cause of public service as we strive to build a future of dignity for all.

United Nations Secretary-General's Message for the UN Public Service Day 2014.

The annual observance of Public Service Day highlights the invaluable contributions of public servants and administrators in our efforts to build a better world for all.
At a time of complex and interdependent global challenges, effective governance and efficient public administration are central to meeting our development goals. They will also be vital for implementing the post-2015 development agenda.
At today’s commemoration in Seoul, the United Nations will recognize 19 public institutions from 14 countries for their outstanding achievements. The winners and finalists come from different regions and different levels of development, but what they have in common is having overcome complex challenges through innovative public service. They have revitalized education for the marginalized, enhanced transparency and accountability, supported environmental protection and deployed technology to increase the efficiency of health and water services. These trail-blazing efforts have resulted in greater equity and inclusion in the delivery of public services in their communities. 
I congratulate these institutions for their dedication to excellence.  I encourage all who work in public service to learn from them and take inspiration from their successes.

The United Nations Public Service Awards Programme (UNPSA), which is the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service, rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide. Through an annual competition, the UNPSA promotes the role, professionalism and visibility of public service. It encourages exemplary public service and recognizes that democracy and successful governance are built on a competent civil service. Since 2003, UNDESA has collected, shared, and disseminated innovative practices in public governance through the UNPSA and other knowledge bases. The UNPSA aims at discovering innovations in governance; reward excellence in the public sector; motivate public servants to further promote innovation; enhance professionalism in the public service; raise the image of public service; enhance trust in government; and collect and disseminate successful practices for possible replication.
