World Environment Day 2021, June 5th

                                    
                 

The emergence of COVID-19 has also shown just how disastrous the consequences of ecosystem loss can be. By shrinking the area of natural habitat for animals, we have created ideal conditions for pathogens – including coronaviruses – to spread. With this big and challenging picture, the World Environment Day is focus in the ecosystem restoration and its theme is “Reimagine. Recreate.Restore.

Ecosystem restoration means preventing, halting and reversing this damage – to go from exploiting nature to healing it. This World Environment Day will kick off the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a global mission to revive billions of hectares, from forests to farmlands, from the top of mountains to the depth of the sea. Only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change and stop the collapse of biodiversity.

We are rapidly reaching the point of no return for the planet.

We face a triple environmental emergency –biodiversity loss, climate disruption and escalating pollution.

For too long, humanity has cut down the Earth's forests, polluted its rivers and oceans, and ploughed its grasslands into oblivion.

We are ravaging the very ecosystems that underpin our societies.

And, in doing so, we risk depriving ourselves of the food, water and resources we need to survive.

The degradation of the natural world is already undermining the well-being of 3.2 billion people – or 40 per cent of humanity.

Luckily, the Earth is resilient.

But she needs our help.

We still have time to reverse the damage we have done.

That is why, on this World Environment Day, we are launching the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.

This global movement will bring together governments, businesses, civil society and private citizens in an unprecedented effort to heal the Earth.

By restoring ecosystems, we can drive a transformation that will contribute to the achievement of all the Sustainable Development Goals.

The task is monumental.

We need to replant and protect our forests.

We need to clean up our rivers and seas.

And we need to green our cities.

Accomplishing these things will not only safeguard the planet’s resources.

It will create millions of new jobs by 2030, generate returns of over $7 trillion dollars every year and help eliminate poverty and hunger.

The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration is a global call to action.

It will draw together political support, scientific research and financial muscle to massively scale up restoration.

Everyone can contribute.

Science tells us these next 10 years are our final chance to avert a climate catastrophe, turn back the deadly tide of pollution and end species loss.

So, let today be the start of a new decade – one in which we finally make peace with nature and secure a better future for all.

Join the celebration

  • Reduce your carbon footprint and save energy! Turn off the lights when leaving an empty room, use energy efficient light bulbs and appliances.
  • Encourage your friends to adopt and plant a tree, or organize a community garden.
  • Save water: turn off the tap when brushing your teeth or shaving, take short showers instead of baths, and check for wasteful leaks in your home.
  • Green your transportation: carpool, use public transportation or bike.
  • Refuse excess packaging, try to re-use and recycle as much as possible. Use cloth bags, reusable cups and silverware, non-plastic bottles...
  • Get involved in a neighborhood clean up, and bring your friends to help out too!

Apps for Climate: A competition brought to you by the World Bank

The World Bank has released new data and tools on climate change as the latest additions to its Open Data Initiative. The Apps for Climate Competition aims to bring together the best ideas from scientists, application developers, civil society organizations, and development practitioners to create innovative apps using World Bank data.

Competition Objectives

This competition challenges participants to develop software applications related to climate change. The applications should serve to raise awareness, measure progress, or to help in some other way to address the development challenges of climate change. Submissions may be any kind of software application, be it for the web, a personal computer, a mobile handheld device, console, SMS, or any software platform broadly available to the public. The only other requirement is that the proposed application use one or more datasets from the World Bank Data Catalog available at data.worldbank.org or the Climate Change Knowledge Portal at climateknowledgeportal.worldbank.org.
Applications which best satisfy the competition criteria will receive cash prizes and the opportunity to have their apps featured on the World Bank Open Data website. Competition participants are encouraged to also use other relevant indicators and datasets, and to be creative in exploring approaches for addressing climate change problems.

About Climate Change and Development

Climate change is expected to hit developing countries the hardest. Its effects (higher temperatures, changes in precipitation patterns, rising sea levels, and more frequent weather-related disasters) pose risks for agriculture, food, and water supplies. At stake are recent gains in the fight against poverty, hunger and disease, and the lives and livelihoods of billions of people in developing countries.
Tackling this immense challenge must involve both mitigation (to avoid the unmanageable) and adaptation (to manage the unavoidable), all while maintaining a focus on its social dimensions.

Comprehensive Assessment on Water Management in Agriculture

There is broad consensus on the need to improve water management and to invest in water for food as these are critical to meet The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The role of water in food and livelihood security is a major issue of concern in the context of continued environmental degradation and persistent poverty throughout the developing world. Although there is considerable knowledge on the issue, an overarching picture on the water-food-livelihoods-environment nexus is missing, leaving uncertainties about where to invest in order to address both human and environmental water needs.
The Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture (CA) is an innovative multi-institute process aimed at identifying existing knowledge and stimulating thought on ways to manage water resources to continue meeting the needs of both humans and ecosystems. The CA critically evaluates the benefits, costs, and impacts of the past 50 years of water development and challenges to water management currently facing communities. It assesses innovative solutions and explores consequences of potential investment and management decisions.

The CA is designed as a learning process, engaging networks of stakeholders to produce knowledge synthesis and methodologies. The main output of the CA is an Assessment report that aims to guide investment and management decisions in the near future considering their impact over the next 50 years in order to enhance food and environmental security to support the achievement of the MDGs.

The Assessment synthesis report is developed along the lines of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment reports, and has formal linkages with the International Assessment of Agricultural Science and Technology for Development. It differs in that it provides in-depth analysis of water and food issues that are inadequately addressed in other global exercises, and benefits from gap-filling research of its first project phase. In the first phase, over 30 projects were developed to fill knowledge gaps and a publications process was initiated to disseminate project results. The development of the Assessment report forms the second phase of the CA process.

Historically, land and water mangement within many coastal deltas has focused on the exclusion of saline water flows that move upstream from the coast.
