Hello everyone. Every year wild postal day reminds us that the postal network is far more than the movement of letters and parcels. It is one of the world's enduring example of global cooperation.
One trusted network connecting people, communities, and nations through a shared commitment to universal service, trust, and reliability.
This year's theme, "one postal network, infinite possibilities", reflects the extraordinary strength of a network built over the generations and continuously evolving.
Today, more than 660,000 post office and 4.6 6 million postal staff as supported by digital technology
and international partnerships form one of the world's largest global ecosystems.
Together they make the post a one-stop shop for people, business, and governments alike.
At the heart of these infinite possibilities is a human connection that only the post can provide. Every day, postal employees bring that connection to life. Serving as trusted bridges between governments, businesses and the people they serve. They help businesses, reach new markets, support women entrepreneurs, and keep rural and underserved communities connected to essential services and new
opportunities. As society evolves, the post evolves with it.
From delivering public service more effectively to enabling business to grow through e-commerce, the post continues to create value for society.
It is expanding access to financial and health care services, advancing secure digital transformation and shaping itself to remain relevant to future generations by continuing to innovate.
The postal network is opening new possibilities while remaining true to its universal service mission.
On this World Postal Day, I extend my appreciation to the millions of postal staff whose dedication and
professionalism made this possible. May we work together to build one postal network that create infinite possibilities for governments, businesses, and above all the people and the communities we serve. Happy World Post Day.
UPU Director General.

This year's International Letter-Writing Competition invited young people to reflect on the importance of friendship and human connection in an increasingly digital world. The UPU warmly thanks all participants from 65 countries, who submitted more than 1.48 million letters. This year, the UPU is partnering with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to inspire young writers worldwide to reflect on why human connection matters in an increasingly digital world and to share these reflections in a letter to a friend. Since 1971, the UPU has encouraged young writers aged 9-15 years (inclusive) to write letters on a given theme for a chance to win exciting prizes. The competition is an excellent way of making young people aware of the important role that postal services play in our societies. It develops their composition skills and ability to express their thoughts clearly. It also fosters enjoyment of letter writing and helps to strengthen the bonds of international friendship. Every year, the UPU’s secretariat – the International Bureau – chooses and publicizes a theme. Participating countries then organize the competition at national level through the Post, often with the support of the educational authorities and media, presenting one winning letter to the international jury convened by the UPU. Entries must reach the UPU International Bureau no later than 5 May each year. The jury then evaluates the letters and selects the overall winners and candidates that merit a special mention. If conditions permit, the UPU will sponsor and arrange for the top winner to attend a special awards ceremony in honour of their achievement, including transport and accommodation for the winner and one accompanying adult. In 2026, this prestigious event is set to take place at the UPU International Bureau. The deadline for submissions has now closed.

Theme for 2026
INTERNATIONAL LETTER WRITING COMPETITION

Write a letter to a friend about why human connection matters in a digital world.

In a world shaped by digital technologies – from social media and messaging apps to artificial intelligence and robotics – the way people connect with one another is changing. While digital tools can bring people together, they can also deepen feelings of loneliness and social isolation when meaningful human connection is missing. This year’s theme builds on WHO-led global evidence showing that social connection is a vital part of overall health and well-being, as well as physical and mental health. Meaningful relationships help reduce loneliness, strengthen empathy, support inclusion and contribute to healthier, more resilient individuals and communities. From a postal perspective, letters remain a powerful symbol and tool of human connection. Writing a letter takes time, care and intention. It allows people to express emotions, share experiences and build relationships in a deeply personal way that transcends distance, screens and time zones. Every letter also carries the human touch of postal workers, whose role in delivering messages helps sustain trust, solidarity and connection between individuals and communities around the world. By writing a letter to a friend, children are encouraged to reflect on their own relationships and to explore how simple acts of communication can foster empathy, kindness and understanding. Through their words, young people can share ideas on how to nurture friendships, stay connected and strengthen human bonds – both offline and online – in a rapidly evolving digital environment.

Statement of the UPU Director General on World Post Day 2025.

This World Post Day, we celebrate the vital role of the postal sector as a lifeline, bringing essential services to everyone, everywhere. The postal network is among the largest and farthest-reaching service infrastructures in the world. With more than 600,000 post offices, it provides communities everywhere with reliable access to communication, commercial, financial and social services. From the most remote areas to the busiest cities, the postal network is a bridge, connecting people to the wider world. The recently adopted UPU Strategy aligns closely with this year’s theme, “#PostforPeople: Local Service. Global Reach.” It envisions the UPU as a driving force in building an interconnected, inclusive and sustainable society, supported by a seamless and innovative postal network that is capable of delivering high-quality, modern services to people around the world. Through this year’s theme, we also want to celebrate the women and men who make this extraordinary universal service possible – the 4.6 million postal workers across 192 member countries, whose dedication enables the postal network to continue to serve billions of people every day. We applaud all those workers who innovate at headquarters, who process millions of parcels at sorting centres, and who deliver by foot, bicycle or vehicle every single day. On this World Post Day, I urge us all to work together in ensuring that the Post continues to offer quality services to everyone, everywhere, connecting local communities to the world. Let us unite to make the postal network more accessible, more reliable and more inclusive than ever.

Happy World Post Day.

UPU Director General.

World Post Day 2024; October 9th.

FORUM: “150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations.“ World Post Day 2024. Today, more than 5 million postal employees are entrusted with a variety of essential and personal items, from messages, gifts and goods, to money and medicines. This trust has been cultivated through a steadfast commitment to safety and security. Posts have tirelessly worked to improve the safety of roads, providing training programmes for delivery drivers, and implementing security measures to keep dangerous goods out of the supply chain, safeguarding workers and customers alike. Furthermore, during times of disasters or conflicts, Posts have extended a helping hand, organizing supplies and emergency services for those in need; often, they are the first to assist in these situations. Posts can leverage this existing trust-based relationship to help bridge a gap facing billions: the digital divide. By connecting their expansive physical network to the digital sphere, Posts are embarking on a massive digital transformation to offer secure online services in this Fourth Industrial Revolution. The UPU has been a dedicated partner in building a safe and connected global network that serves nearly eight billion people each day with modern and secure services, and it is a key part of this transformation. It’s time to bring awareness to the Post's role in the everyday lives of people and businesses, as well as its contribution to global social and economic development. Follow the conversation with the hashtags: #UPUCongress, #WorldPostDay, #PostalDevelopment #9October.

EVENTS: October 9th, The World Post Day 2024 Global Celebration will be held at UPU Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. As a result, the UPU's member countries are encouraged to organize their own national activities to celebrate the event, including everything from the introduction or promotion of new postal products and services, to the organization of open days at post offices, mail centres and postal museums. Countries will participate in the UPU International Letter-Writing Competition, and the national winners will be announced. To mark the 150th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union, the UPU will held a high-level event to focus on the theme “150 years of enabling communication and empowering peoples across nations“. Get the agenda Programme!

As we celebrate 150 years of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), we recognize its importance as one of the earliest examples of multilateralism. Founded with the goal of creating a unified postal system, the UPU has brought together countries to support global communication, cultural exchange, and access to essential services. What started with 22 nations now includes 192 member countries, showing the strength of international cooperation.
Over the years, the UPU has adapted to challenges like wars, crises, and rapid technological changes. It has remained a strong symbol of global unity, ensuring communication is accessible to everyone, especially the most vulnerable.
Today, the UPU leads efforts to modernize and improve postal services. It provides a space for countries to share knowledge, find new solutions, and address modern challenges. The UPU's spirit of cooperation helps turn obstacles into opportunities, making sure postal services evolve with the changing world.
Where once we viewed the rise of digital communication and the decline in traditional mail volumes as a threat, we now see a wealth of possibilities. The UPU's extensive network has adapted to support a broader range of services – including e-commerce, financial, social and digital services – ensuring inclusive access for people worldwide, including in the most remote areas in order to leave no-one behind.
Instead of viewing competition as a challenge, the UPU welcomes partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders. This inclusive approach strengthens our ability to address global challenges, like climate change, which requires cooperation across borders.
As we look to the future, the UPU’s mission remains clear: to connect and empower people around the world. By staying committed to multilateralism, innovation, and inclusivity, the UPU will continue to support global communication and serve future generations for the next 150 years.

Director General of the UPU International Bureau.

Statement by the U.N. Secretary-General on World Post Day 2022; October 9th.

On World Post Day, we celebrate the critical contributions of postal workers in connecting people around the world with essential services that improve their daily lives and boost the development of their communities.

On World Post Day, we celebrate the critical contributions of postal workers in connecting people around the world with essential services that improve their daily lives and boost the development of their communities.

With a global network and universal service mandate to ensure access for all, the postal sector is a key partner in our effort to deliver the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The theme of this year’s World Post Day – “Post for Planet” – recognizes the many ways in which postal services are finding cleaner, greener means to reach our doorsteps day in, day out.

“Post for Planet” is also a call to action for the postal sector to use its position as a connector between governments, businesses, and people to take a leading role in our fight against climate change.

Working with partners from across the logistics, financial and digital spheres, postal services have the power to catalyze positive actions across a wide range of other sectors.

I thank the Universal Postal Union for leading this call to action and look forward to working together towards a more prosperous and sustainable future for all.

U.N. Secretary-General.
