In the midst of conflict and division, International Jazz Day 2022 sends the vital message that, no matter who we are or where we come from–we can still make music together.

Watch the International Jazz Day 2022 All-Star Global Concert streamed live from the UN General Assembly Hall in New York featuring dozens of acclaimed artists affirming the importance of jazz as a means of achieving unity and peace through dialogue and diplomacy.

With Herbie Hancock serving as Host and Artistic Director and John Beasley as Musical Director, the program is set to feature performances by some of the world’s most accomplished jazz artists, including vocalists Shemekia Copeland, José James, Youn Sun Nah (Republic of Korea), Gregory Porter, Alune Wade (Senegal) and Lizz Wright; pianists Joey Alexander (Indonesia), Helio Alves (Brazil), Laurent de Wilde (France), Hiromi (Japan), Ray Lema (Democratic Republic of Congo), and Tarek Yamani (Lebanon); drummers Terri Lyne Carrington and Brian Blade; bassists James Genus, Marcus Miller and Linda Oh (Australia); saxophonists Ravi Coltrane, David Sanborn and Erena Terakubo (Japan); guitarist Mark Whitfield and trumpeters Randy Brecker and Jeremy Pelt, among others. Also joining the global ensemble will be harmonicist Grégoire Maret (Switzerland), harpist Edmar Castañeda (Colombia), percussionist Pedrito Martínez (Cuba) and clarinetist Kinan Azmeh (Syria). As part of the lead-up to the concert, the Thelonious Institute of Jazz and UNESCO will offer a series of free virtual educational programs, including master classes and presentations by Arturo O’Farrill, Terri Lyne Carrington, Oran Etkin, Danny Grissett, Dan Tepfer and others will lead master classes and presentations. The 2022 education programs are presented in collaboration with the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice, the JAM Music Lab University (Vienna) and JZ Music Group (Shanghai), among other organizations. Major support for International Jazz Day is provided by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Air transportation and additional support for artists and educators is provided by United Airlines, the airline partner of International Jazz Day.

Dear Friends,
 

It is an honor to invite you to the 5th Annual International Jazz Day celebrations in Washington, D.C. This day was adopted by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization in 2012 to promote jazz music and culture as a tool to inspire peaceful cooperation and partnership among communities around the globe.

This day is an extraordinary demonstration of the power of jazz to promote world peace, stimulate intercultural dialogue and above all, bring people together. On April 30, people in 195 countries on every single continent will be demonstrating their commitment to the unifying power of music.

We are partnering with teachers, musicians, students, historians, and community leaders at schools, universities, libraries, art venues, community centers, hospitals, and shelters. All over the world, the streets will be alive with the sounds of jazz – of freedom – and millions of people will learn about its rich history; its ethical and philosophical foundations; and its inherent message of acceptance and respect. Our hope is that this day will inspire people all over the world to listen to one another and cooperate in a spirit of peace.

CONCERT : International Jazz Day 2016 All-Star Global Concert.

Each year, the All-Star Global Concert brings together internationally acclaimed artists from around the world who represent jazz and other musical genres for a performance spanning styles, cultures and languages. In the spirit of International Jazz Day, the All-Star Global Concert takes place in a landmark venue with rich historical significance. We are honored that President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will host the International Jazz Day 2016 All-Star Global Concert from the White House, with artists performing throughout the White House and on the South Lawn. The concert will be broadcast across the United States on April 30th – International Jazz Day – as an

ABC network television special and streamed around the world by the United Nations and UNESCO. Viewers will experience jazz being played at the White House, where it has been showcased by every Administration since President Kennedy.
