United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2026; September 12th.

Solidarity Rising; Global Alliance for Inclusive and Innovative Development

FORUM: "Solidarity Rising: Global Alliance for Inclusive and Innovative Development." United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2026. Across the Global South – 134 countries that are home to 80 percent of the world’s population – solidarity is rising. Countries are increasingly turning to one another to exchange innovative ideas, expertise, and effective solutions. From renewable energy and digital innovation to public health and sustainable agriculture, successful approaches are being shared, adapted and scaled in ways that improve lives. What unites these efforts is the growing recognition that progress is strongest when knowledge, experience and opportunity are shared. This momentum is building against a difficult backdrop. For example, developing countries paid a record US$921 billion to service external debt in 2024, and UNCTAD estimates that 3.4 billion people now live in countries that spend more on interest payments than on health or education. Communities are confronting droughts, floods and extreme weather. Young people are seeking opportunities in a rapidly changing digital economy. Countries are striving to improve health care, education, energy access and economic growth while navigating increasing uncertainty. No country can solve these challenges alone. Yet there is reason for optimism. South-South trade alone reached US$7.2 trillion in 2025, from the 1995 baselineOf $0.5 trillion. Today, more than half of all exports from developing countries are destined for other developing economies, compared to just 38% three decades ago. Similarly, South-South investment has become an increasingly important force in the global economy. Since the 1990s, foreign direct investment (FDI) flows among developing countries have quadrupled, with their share of global FDI rising from just 9% to 32% in the period 2020– 2023. Today, the Global South generates more than 40% of global economic output, accounts for nearly half of worldmerchandise trade, and attracts over half of global investment inflows. These shifts and trends highlight the growing economic weight and influence of developing countries, as well as the growing economic interconnectedness of the Global South and its increasing role in shaping global trade patterns. Farmers are adapting techniques pioneered elsewhere to strengthen food security. Cities are applying lessons from peers to build safer and more resilient communities. Governments are drawing on experiences from other countries to initiate and/or expand access to renewable energy, improve public services and strengthen disaster preparedness. These exchanges are helping countries leapfrog traditional development pathways by drawing on proven successes. This is the essence of South-South and triangular cooperation: building on shared experiences to pave pathways of shared progress. The United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation celebrates this spirit of solidarity and collaboration. It recognizes that every country has something valuable to offer and that solutions emerge from every region of the world. It is about sharing ideas, building trust and learning from one another. This year’s theme, “Solidarity Rising: Global Alliance for Inclusive and Innovative Development”, reflects a simple reality: today’s challenges are shared, and so are the solutions. Across regions, countries are connecting expertise, innovation and experience to address common priorities. The theme reflects how collective actions and collaboration are shaping a more inclusive, resilient and sustainable future. This growing momentum is documented in the Global Report on South-South and Triangular Cooperation, which highlights how countries of the Global South are increasingly driving innovation, sharing solutions and forging new partnerships to address complex development challenges. The report points to a future in which South-South and triangular cooperation play an even greater role in accelerating sustainable development and strengthening international cooperation. A similar trend is evident across the current generation of United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks. Increasingly, South-South and triangular cooperation are being positioned not as stand-alone areas of work, but as strategic means of implementation for advancing nationally owned SDG priorities. Countries are using these approaches to mobilize expertise, strengthen institutional capacities, scale proven solutions and diversify partnerships. In several cases, Cooperation Frameworks identify stronger South-South and triangular cooperation networks and platforms as an important means of maintaining development progress amid growing geopolitical uncertainty and fragmentation. Recent international gatherings have also highlighted both the urgency of these challenges and the power of cooperation to address them. During the 22nd Session of the High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation, which drew more than 130 countries and stakeholders – the highest level of engagement in the Committee’s history – Member States reaffirmed the importance of countries working together to accelerate sustainable development and strengthen international solidarity. Discussions underscored the growing role of South-South and triangular cooperation in responding to emerging challenges and advancing shared development priorities. During the Dushanbe Water Conference, leaders and experts emphasized that water security is one of the defining challenges of our time. It is no longer solely an environmental issue, but a major socio-economic, peace and security priority directly linked to sustainable growth, inclusive prosperity, and resilience of countries and communities. Countries shared practical experiences on managing water resources, building resilience to water-related stresses and disasters, and strengthening cooperation across borders to protect communities, livelihoods and ecosystems. In Baku, at the World Urban Forum, governments, cities and partners explored how cooperation can help create more sustainable, inclusive and resilient communities across the rural-urban continuum, particularly in the rapidly urbanizing Global South. Discussions explored approaches to housing, infrastructure, climate resilience and urban planning, demonstrating the value of learning from one another’s experiences. The 2026 observance of the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation will mark the launch of the Global Alliance for South-South and Triangular Cooperation, a new platform designed to connect countries seeking solutions with partners that can contribute expertise, experience and catalytic support. The Global Alliance will help transform shared knowledge into practical action by facilitating partnerships, strengthening collaboration and expanding opportunities to scale successful solutions. Supported by UNOSSC’s South-South Galaxy+, the Global Alliance will enable countries and partners to connect more easily, identify opportunities for cooperation and share experiences across regions and sectors. By bringing together governments, United Nations entities, development partners, financial institutions, academia, civil society and the private sector, the Global Alliance will strengthen collective action for sustainable development. As the international community looks ahead to important discussions on the future of South-South cooperation during the eighty-first session of the General Assembly, the United Nations Day and the launch of the Global Alliance for South-South and Triangular Cooperation arrive at a pivotal moment, not only to celebrate progress, but to set the course for what comes next. The message is unmistakable: solutions, expertise, and innovation are already at hand. Across the Global South, countries are leading the way by showcasing proven models of success. The task before us is to connect these solutions, strengthen partnerships and scale impact so that more people can benefit from the knowledge and experience that already exists. Rising solidarity provides an opportunity to transform shared challenges into shared progress. United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2026 is therefore more than a celebration. It is a call to action. It is an opportunity to strengthen partnerships, share solutions and reaffirm a simple principle that remains as important today as ever: when countries work together, everyone benefits. Join the Global Alliance for South-South and Triangular Cooperation. Together, we can move solutions further, faster. UN South South Cooperation Day 2026

Statement of the United Nations Secretary-General for the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2026; September 12th.

On the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, we celebrate the transformative power of partnership to accelerate sustainable development.

This year’s theme – “Solidarity Rising: Global Alliance for Inclusive and Innovative Development” – reminds us that countries across the Global South are creating and sharing solutions every day.

We have seen what South-South cooperation can achieve: from farmers adapting to a changing climate, to entrepreneurs expanding access to green energy, to health workers responding more rapidly to outbreaks.

The launch of the Global Alliance for South-South and Triangular Cooperation marks an exciting new chapter. Bringing together governments, development banks, academia and the private sector, it will help match national priorities with financing and expertise – connecting ideas to investment, and ambition to action.

As we observe this important day, let us ensure that solutions created anywhere can improve lives everywhere. Let’s come together across borders for equality, prosperity and peace.

António Guterres, UN Secretary-General.

United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2024; September 12th.

FORUM: "A Better Tomorrow with South-South Cooperation." United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2024. Development impacts of robust catalytic collaboration among the countries of the Global South in the areas of trade, health, investment, debt relief, regional integration, and digitalization, among others, are being highlighted by Member States in various fora. Global discussions – including the BAPA+40 High-level Conference on South-South Cooperation, the 21st Session of the High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation, and recently at the Third South Summit, the High-level Ministerial Conference on Middle-Income Countries, and the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States, among others – have recognized the urgent need to leverage South-South cooperation more strategically to address the challenges the world is facing more effectively. By harnessing the power of shared experiences, knowledge, and resources, countries can enhance their capacity to address the impact of climate change, ensure inclusive development, and secure a sustainable future for all. In Our Common Agenda, the United Nations Secretary General underlined solidarity among countries as necessary prerequisites for developing collective breakthrough solutions and ensuring the delivery of equitable benefits that leave no one behind. South-South cooperation as a manifestation of solidarity among developing countries has been hailed as an important development cooperation modality. To address those challenges that transcend or spill over borders, and to respond to the knock-on impact of interconnected crises that cascade through immediate geographic areas, South-South cooperation at the regional level will be even more crucial to strengthen such solidarity. Due to their proximity in geography, common experiences, complementarity in economic conditions, as well as in history, language, culture and ethnicity, South-South cooperation at the regional level will enable countries to leverage individual assets for mutually beneficial efforts, make available to peers directly relevant home-grown solutions for collective gains, and strengthen solidarity around emerging trends that greatly influence the prospects and development pathways of neighbors and the region as a whole. At this halfway point to 2030 and as we head to the Summit of the Future, this year’s observance will be an opportunity to take stock of progress and highlight opportunities and challenges for South-South cooperation, as well as emerging trends. It is also an opportunity to go deeper across regions, and capture how South-South cooperation has evolved and helped achieve regional as well as global goals and aspirations, with the view of helping chart pathways to a more inclusive and sustainable future. Through leveraging South-South and triangular cooperation – as envisioned in the outcome of the Second High-level United Nations Conference on South-South Cooperation (BAPA+40) – there is an opportunity to address both immediate and long-term needs together, supporting countries to get back on track towards achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Follow the conversations with the hashtags: #12september, #SouthSouth, #TriangularCooperation, and #SouthSouthCooperation.

A Better Tomorrow with South-South Cooperation.

On the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, we celebrate the transformative power of unity and solidarity among developing nations.

We remember that only together can countries leverage multilateral support and realise shared prosperity.

South-South cooperation does not reduce the responsibility of wealthier nations to help tackle global inequalities. It does not replace North-South cooperation.

But strong South-South partnerships – along with triangular cooperation – are crucial to building a better future for all.

These partnerships can advance a fairer, more inclusive global financial system that responds to the challenges faced by developing countries.

They can help unlock the power of digitalization, data, and science-backed solutions for sustainable development.

They can help improve the quality of life today and for future generations, building resilience and empowering women and young people.

The Summit of the Future in September is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to South-South and triangular cooperation, embracing solidarity and mutual support

By pooling resources, know-how, and experience, we can create a more equitable world for all.

António Guterres

United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2023; September 12th.

FORUM: "Solidarity, Equity and Partnership: Unlocking South-South Cooperation to Achieve the SDGs." United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2023.

This year’s United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation will fall one week prior to the SDG Summit, and will be an opportunity to raise awareness and accelerate practical actions as we arrive at this halfway point to 2030. The commemoration – organized by the UNOSSC, together with the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations – will be an opportunity to highlight needs emerging from various regions as well as to present transformational initiatives toward achieving the most acute priorities of the 2023 Agenda by Member States, the United Nations System, private sector, and civil society. During the 21st session of the High-level Committee on South-South Cooperation, the United Nations Member States recognized the development impacts of robust catalytic collaborations among the countries of the Global South in the areas of trade, investment, regional integration, and digitalization among others. Several reports issued prior to this High-level Committee session illustrated how Southern countries are strengthening institutional capacities while intensifying experience sharing and exchange of good practices toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Furthermore, recent global discussions – including the 2023 Development Cooperation Forum and HighLevel Political Forum – have recognized the urgent need to leverage South-South cooperation as a means to address the challenges the world is facing in an sustainable and equitable manner. Statement by th eUnited Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2023, September 12th.

In our world of deeply connected challenges, South-South cooperation plays a vital role in shaping a brighter future. The United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation is a powerful reminder that when nations unite, they can overcome obstacles and accelerate sustainable development.

From climate action to poverty eradication, from health care to education, from trade to digitalization, solidarity and strong partnerships between developing countries can pave the way for a more equitable and sustainable world.

Only together can we build a world of shared prosperity, where cooperation knows no borders. Through South-South cooperation, countries of the global South can share knowledge, skills, expertise and resources, coordinate their efforts and benefit from economies of scale. Together, they can multiply their sustainable development efforts to mitigate climate disruption, find solutions to a global health crisis, manage supply chain disruptions and deliver humanitarian assistance.

South-South and triangular cooperation are important, high-value complements to cooperation with developed countries. But they do not replace or reduce the responsibilities and commitments of the global North. Developed economies have a duty to work constructively with economies in the global South, to reduce inequality and build bridges to a sustainable future for all.

As we mark the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation, let us recognize this form of collaboration as an essential catalyst for change, embodying solidarity, innovation and mutual support.

António Guterres.

Achieving the ambitious targets of the 2030 Agenda and adapting to the changing global context mentioned above will require engagement from stakeholders leveraging their diverse and unique advantages. South-South and triangular cooperation are important cornerstones of development activity and will serve as vital modalities for action as complements to North-South cooperation.

Statement by the United Nations Secretary-General on United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2022.

In this era of unprecedented challenge and upheaval, solutions lie in solidarity.

South-South and triangular cooperation are critical for developing countries to mitigate and adapt to climate disruption, address the global health crisis, including COVID-19 recovery, and achieve all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

It is important that Southern-led development solutions are shared far and wide.

South-South and triangular cooperation must play an ever-increasing role in resolving our common challenges.

But that does not absolve the wealthier nations of their responsibilities to work constructively with the developing world, especially to reduce growing inequalities between and within nations.

As we commemorate the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation,I encourage all nations and communities to redouble cooperation and build bridges to achieve an equitable and sustainable future for all.

U.N. Secretary-General.

The global landscape has shifted significantly in recent decades. The world has seen important economic and demographic changes, cascading impact of climate change, a global health pandemic, a rise in global conflict and refugee flows, and rapid advancement in the availability and use of digital technologies. These developments have fundamentally changed the way that people live, work, connect and socialize. They offer new challenges but also provide new opportunities for human development.

This event will provide an opportunity for UN Member States to celebrate the UN Day for South-South cooperation and to reflect on their advocacy and commitment towards the contribution of South-South and triangular cooperation to urgent development solutions.

This event will also feature the launch of the publication “Good Practices in South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Development – Vol. 4.” The new volume features more than 130 good practices presented by over 50 partners, including Member States, intergovernmental organizations (IGOs), United Nations entities, and other development stakeholders.

The volume includes solutions on COVID-19 response and recovery, poverty alleviation, climate action, trade facilitation and digitalization. Building on the three prior highly successful editions, the 2022 volume significantly expands the South-South and triangular cooperation knowledge base across all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), highlighting innovation, and a greater diversity of partners now leveraging South-South and triangular cooperation collaboration for development.

A reception and a cultural event will be hosted by the Government of Thailand and UNESCAP.

United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation 2015, September 12th.

The United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation highlights the progress being made by the global South.
Despite ongoing challenges, developing countries have become critical actors in the global socioeconomic landscape. A majority have joined the middle-income club, and some have attained impressive economic growth, high savings and investment rates, and a larger share of trade in goods and services. The global South is also home to many high-quality enterprises, technological competencies and leading finance and banking institutions. The New Development Bank recently established by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, as well as the proposed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, hold considerable promise to complement existing sources of finance for development.
South-South cooperation can therefore play a key role in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is to be adopted by world leaders at a summit later this month at UN Headquarters.  As we embark on efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, we need to accelerate development momentum across the South, including by building resilience and mitigating risk. This will require attention to the needs of the most vulnerable by enhancing the productive capacities of Least Developed Countries and improving access to environmentally sound technologies, education, essential medicines and credit.
On this Day, let us recognize the great potential of South-South cooperation
to improve the well-being of the vast majority of the world’s people.

"South-South cooperation has the potential to balance growth and equity on a global scale. Even in the midst of severe economic, social and political instabilities, South-South cooperation has continued to drive buoyant trade and financial flows in recent years,” said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in a
Message during the UN Day of South-South Cooperation in 2012.

“In these past ten years, we were able to develop policies that raised global awareness in support of South-South cooperation, enable Member States to set policies and principles, facilitate coordination and mainstreaming of South-South Cooperation within the UN system, enabled national governments to better manage their South-South Cooperation initiatives, and fostered intra regional networking”, said Yiping Zhou, Director of the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation.
