United Nations Day 2025; October 24th.

FORUM: "Building Our Future Together." United Nations Day 2025. Marking the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the @UN Charter. Statement of the United Nations Secretary-General on  United Nations Day 2025; October 24th.

“We the peoples of the United Nations...”

These are not just the opening words of the United Nations Charter – they define who we are.

The United Nations is more than an institution. It is a living promise – spanning borders, bridging continents, inspiring generations.

For eighty years, we have worked to forge peace, tackle poverty and hunger, advance human rights, and build a more sustainable world – together.

As we look ahead, we confront challenges of staggering scale: escalating conflicts, climate chaos, runaway technologies, and threats to the very fabric of our institution.

This is no time for timidity or retreat.

Now, more than ever, the world must recommit to solving problems no nation can solve alone.

On this UN Day, let’s stand together and fulfil the extraordinary promise of your United Nations.

Let’s show the world what is possible when “we the peoples” choose to act as one.

António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General.

Side Event commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the UN co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Burundi and the Permanent Mission of Djibouti to the United Nations.

This commemorative event seeks to reaffirm the founding values of the United Nations and consider how current practices within the UN system can more fully reflect them—particularly as the international communityreviews the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and prepares for the Second World Summit for Social Development. As Member States look ahead to future outcomes, revisiting the UN's founding, offers both clarity and a common vision.

At a moment of increasing polarization, this event aims to ensure that multilateralism remains anchored in the UN's original mission—to uphold human dignity, preserve peace, and to protect human life, including future generations—while also providing Member States and civil society with a meaningful platform for dialogue and the pursuit of common goals.

Objective of the Event
  • To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the UN by highlighting its founding values and reflect on the original vision laid out in the UN Charter.
  • To offer respectful, constructive perspectives on how today's UN system might realign with these principles.
  • To reaffirm the central importance of the dignity of the human person as we prepare for the World Summit in Doha.

National flags are a mark of pride and patriotism in every country around the world.  But there is only one flag that belongs to all of us. That blue flag of the United Nations was a banner of hope for me growing up in wartime Korea.
Seven decades after its founding, the United Nations remains a beacon for all humanity.
Every day, the United Nations feeds the hungry and shelters those driven from their homes.
The United Nations vaccinates children who would otherwise die from preventable diseases.
The United Nations defends human rights for all, regardless of race, religion, nationality, gender or sexual orientation.
Our peacekeepers are on the frontlines of conflict; our mediators bring warriors to the peace table; our relief workers brave treacherous environments to deliver life-saving assistance. The United Nations works for the entire human family of seven billion people, and cares for the earth, our one and only home.
And it is the diverse and talented staff of the United Nations who help bring the Charter to life.
The 70th anniversary is a moment to recognize their dedication – and to honour the many who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
The world faces many crises, and the limits of collective international action are painfully clear.  Yet no single country or organization can address today’s challenges alone.
The timeless values of the UN Charter must remain our guide.  Our shared duty is to “unite our strength” to serve “we the peoples”.
To mark this anniversary, monuments and buildings across the world are being illuminated in UN blue.  As we shine a light on this milestone anniversary, let us reaffirm our commitment to a better and brighter future for all.

UN Day 2013, October 24

UN Day, October 24, 2013, marks the 68th anniversary of when the United Nations Charter went into effect. This year's theme is Partnerships for Global Progress.

United Nations Secretary-General's Message for the United Day 2013.

Dear friends,

United Nations Day is a chance to recognize how much this invaluable Organization contributes to peace and common progress.
It is a time to reflect on what more we can do to realize our vision for a better world.
The fighting in Syria is our biggest security challenge.
Millions of people depend on UN humanitarian personnel for life-saving assistance.
UN experts are working hand-in-hand with the Nobel Peace Prize-winning Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to destroy Syria’s stockpiles.
And we are pushing for a diplomatic solution to end suffering that has gone on far too long.
Our most urgent development challenge is to make sustainability a reality.
The Millennium Development Goals have cut poverty in half.
Now we must maintain the momentum, craft an equally inspiring post-2015 development agenda and reach an agreement on climate change.
This year again, we saw the United Nations come together on armed conflict, human rights, the environment and many other issues.
We continue to show what collective action can do.  We can do even more.
In a world that is more connected, we must be more united.
On United Nations Day, let us pledge to live up to our founding ideals and work together for peace, development and human rights.

October 24th, World Development Information Day

World Development Information Day 2012

World Development Information Day 2012

October 24th 2012

In 1972 the UN General Assembly instituted World Development Information Day in an effort to draw attention of world public opinion to development problems and the need to strengthen international cooperation to solve them.

The Assembly decided that the date for the Day should be in alignment with the United Nations Day held on the 24th of October, which was also the date of the adoption of the International Development Strategy for the Second United Nations Development Decade  in 1970.

The Assembly felt that improving the dissemination of information and the mobilization of public opinion, particularly among young people, would lead to greater awareness of the problems of development, thus, promoting efforts in the sphere of international cooperation for development of appropriate and viable solutions to these development issues.

United Nations Day, October 24

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon's message on United Nations Day (24th October)

Secretary-General's Message for 2012 -

We are living through a period of profound turmoil, transition and transformation. Insecurity, inequality and intolerance are spreading. Global and national institutions are being put to the test. With so much at stake, the United Nations must keep pace across the spectrum of its activities — peace, development, human rights, the rule of law, the empowerment of the world's women and youth.

There has been important progress on many fronts. Extreme poverty has been cut in half since the year 2000. Democratic transitions are under way in many countries. There are encouraging signs of economic growth across the developing world.

Now is the time to raise our collective ambitions. With the 2015 deadline for the Millennium Development Goals fast approaching, we must intensify our efforts to reach all of these lifesaving targets. We must prepare a bold and practical post-2015 development agenda. And we must continue to combat intolerance, save people caught in conflicts and establish lasting peace.

The United Nations is not just a meeting place for diplomats. The United Nations is a peacekeeper disarming fighters, a health worker distributing medicine, a relief team aiding refugees, a human rights expert helping deliver justice.

In carrying out this global mission we rely on countless friends and supporters. Non-governmental organizations, scientists, scholars, philanthropists, religious leaders, business executives and concerned citizens are critical to our success. No single leader, country or institution can do everything. But each of us, in our own way, can do something.

On this UN Day, let us reaffirm our individual commitment and our collective resolve to live up to the ideals of the United Nations Charter and build a better world for all. Ban Ki-moon
