FORUM: "Celebrating the day Guyu in honor of Cangjie." Chinese language Day 2024. The date for the Chinese day was selected from Guyu ("Rain of Millet"), which is the 6th of 24 solar terms in the traditional East Asian calendars, to pay tribute to Cangjie. April 20th marks the Chinese Language Day at the United Nations, celebrating multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote the use of the Chinese language. As the second most-spoken language in the world, Chinese has also become the fastest growing language learning market globally. EVENTS: At UNHQ in New York, On April 20th; The Chinese Book Club Language Day entitled ‘‘Music of Love and Words of Harmony: What's Chinese Is Global’’ will consist of three segments: a short Chinese music performance, a talk and a round-table discussion. Chinese star Mr. Shēn Zhōu will sing "Ode to Peace", a new song specially composed for this year's UN Chinese Language Day. Mr. Chén Ji (DGACM), who translated the lyrics of "Ode to Peace" into English, will delve into the minutiae of the translation process and illustrate the vital importance of wielding human prowess and savor-faire to build cultural bridges through language. During the roundtable, the young Chinese creators of "Ode to Peace" will share their insights with the audience. Following by the 24 Solar Terms: Fifth Great Invention of Ancient China and the Exhibition: Chinese Characters: A Journey of Creation, Connection And Harmony. These events for the Chinese language Day 2024 observance will be co-hosted by the United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations Security Council, The Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the U.N.; The Department of Public Information, the United Nations Department of General Assembly Conferences and Meetings (UNDGACM); The United Nations Interpreters, the United Nations Multimedia, the United Nations Radio. In Celebration of the 15th UN Chinese Language Day the Chinese book club have presented "Music of love & world of harmony, what's Chinese is Global".

At UNESCO HQ in Paris; On 15-19 April 2024 from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm (GMT); The Délégation de Chine will organize a meeting with Member States and Institutions for the Celebration of the United Nations Chinese Language Day 2024.

At the DGACM (Department of General Assembly Conferences Management), An exhibit will showcase the 24 solar terms - The Fifth Great Invention of Ancient China.

Around the World; In addition, the United Nations offices in Geneva, Vienna, as well as the Economic Commission for Africa and UN peacekeeping missions will host exhibitions, lectures, online campaigns to mark the day.

CONCERT: The United Nations Singers are a recreational choir formed in 1947 under the UN Staff Recreation Council to spread the message of harmony and understanding through music.

Youth together for a better world

On today’s Chinese Language Day, under the theme “Youth Together for a Better World”, set sail for China in this animated video brought to you by China Media Group together with the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) as part of its Cultural Activities Programme, and the Permanent Mission of China to the UN in Geneva. Since 2021, UNOG, the Permanent Mission of China and the China Media Group have been co-hosting annual cultural events to mark this day.

The Chinese language (汉语/漢語 Hànyǔ; 华语/華語 Huáyǔ; 中文 Zhōngwén) is a language or language family consisting of varieties which are mutually intelligible to varying degrees. Originally the indigenous languages spoken by the Han Chinese in China, it forms one of the branches of Sino-Tibetan family of languages. About one-fifth of the world's population, or over one billion people, speaks some variety of Chinese as their native language. Internal divisions of Chinese are usually perceived by their native speakers as dialects of a single Chinese language, rather than separate languages, although this identification is considered inappropriate by some linguists and sinologists.

This year's Chinese Language Day will be held under the theme of "Chinese Wisdom for a Green World" to provide Chinese wisdom and solutions for green and sustainable development, thus echoing the Water Conference, the SDG Summit, and other important SDG-related meetings held or to be held by the United Nations this year. 2023 is a critical year for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Midway to the deadline set out in the Agenda, we are unfortunately far off track for many SDGs. As Secretary-General Guterres pointed out, it is high time to turn words into action and redouble our efforts to regain the lost ground for sustainable development.

Agenda: 1. Hybrid Symposium: Sustainable Future through a Sci-Fi Lens World-renowned sci-fi writer and Hugo Award winner Mr. Liu Cixin will join UN officials via video link and share views on sustainable development and the protection of mother earth. 

Agenda 2. Calligrapher and educator Mr. Cui Xuelu will give an interactive lecture on the history of Chinese characters and calligraphy, elaborating on the concept of harmony between humanity and nature in Chinese calligraphy.

Chinese Language Day 2022: April 20th.

Chinese was established as an official language of the United Nations in 1946. However, in the early years, Chinese was not commonly used in the work of the United Nations.

Today the International Community pay tribute to Cangjie, a legendary figure in ancient China claimed to be the inventor of Chinese characters.

EVENTS: Today, more and more UN offices and staff members work with the Chinese language. The language, therefore, bears testimony to the evolvement of the United Nations, as well as the increasingly closer relationship between it and China.

 FORUM: Commemorating the contribution of Cangjie, the "ancestor of Chinese characters".   Chinese Language Day 2021

On Tuesday, 20 April 2021, the UN Chamber Music Society of the United Nations Staff Recreation Council (UNCMS) will present a virtual concert in celebration of UN Chinese Language Day, which will celebrate the linguistic and cultural diversity of humanity, particularly through Chinese language and music. Chinese Language Day has been set as the "Gu Yu" of the twenty-four solar terms of the lunar calendar, to commemorate the contribution of Cangjie, the "ancestor of Chinese characters". Over the years, the UN Chinese Language Day has become a window for people to understand Chinese culture.

As music is a universal language, the concert’s all-Chinese music programme symbolizes the spiritual connection between music and the Chinese language, one of the most widely spoken languages in the world – and will provide a window for people to understand the richness of Chinese culture and way life. The ancient text of the “Tao Te Ching” states that the Tao is the eternal, changeless spirit that runs through all life and matter. It further says that the task of life is to bring ourselves into attunement with the Tao, so that we are always moving in harmony with the universe, and not in dissonance against it. The music programme will help provide inspiration to the beauty of Chinese Taoism, which treasures 3 things in human beings: compassion, economy, and humility.
