International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2025

FORUM: "48 years of recognition".  International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2025.The General Assembly called for the annual observance of November 29th as International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in 1977 with the resolution 32/40 B. On that day, in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine (resolution 181 (II)). In resolution 60/37 of 1 December 2005, the Assembly requested the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the Division for Palestinian Rights, as part of the observance, to continue to organize an annual exhibit on Palestinian rights or a cultural event in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN. The resolution also encourages Member States to continue to give the widest support to the observance of the Day of Solidarity.

This year’s International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People comes after two years of horrific suffering in Gaza – and the start of a much-needed ceasefire.

Survivors are mourning the deaths of tens of thousands of friends and family – nearly a third of them children – and thousands more have been injured. Hunger, disease and trauma run rampant, while schools, homes and hospitals lie in ruins.

Injustice also continues in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, with Israeli military operations, settler violence, settlement expansion, evictions, demolitions and threats of annexation.

At the same time, hundreds of humanitarians have been killed. The majority were Palestinian UN staff, marking the largest loss of personnel in the Organization’s history. More journalists have perished than in any conflict since the Second World War.

In so many ways, this tragedy has tested the norms and laws that have guided the international community for generations. The killing of so many civilians, the repeated displacement of an entire population and the obstruction of humanitarian aid should never be acceptable under any circumstances.

The recent ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope. It is now vital that all parties respect it fully and work in good faith towards solutions that restore and uphold international law. This includes returning the remains of the hostages from the 7 October attacks, promptly and in a dignified manner, to grieving families in Israel.

Lifesaving humanitarian aid must be allowed to enter Gaza at scale, and the international community must continue to stand firmly with UNRWA — an irreplaceable lifeline for millions of Palestinians, including Palestine refugees.

I repeat my call for an end to the unlawful occupation of the Palestinian Territory — as affirmed by the International Court of Justice and the General Assembly — and for irreversible progress towards a two-State solution, in line with international law and relevant UN resolutions, with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security within their secure and recognized borders, on the basis of pre-1967 lines, with Jerusalem as the capital of both States.

On this International Day of Solidarity, let us draw inspiration from the Palestinian people themselves, whose resilience and hope are a testament to the human spirit. Let us stand in solidarity with their rights to dignity, justice and self-determination — and work together to build a peaceful future for all.

António Guterres, Secretary-General.

At UNHQ in New York

Every year on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, UN Member States stand together in a moment of reflection and renewed commitment to peace. This year's commemoration will take place amid a fragile ceasefire in Gaza following unimaginable violence and a humanitarian catastrophe that has claimed the lives of tens of thousands and forcibly displaced hundreds of thousands more.

  • Secretary-General's remarks, to be delivered by Mr. Courtenay Rattray, Chef de Cabinet

Solidarity Day commemorates the adoption on 29 November 1947 of General Assembly Resolution 181, which envisaged the partition of Mandate Palestine into two states - one Arab and one Jewish - with Jerusalem under United Nations administration. Over seven decades later, after numerous wars and ongoing conflict, the hope for lasting peace in the Middle East remains unfulfilled. Today, the need for a durable solution is more urgent than ever.

On this solemn day, the international community, led by the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, gathers for an expression of profound solidarity. The Committee special meeting, to be held at the UN headquarters in New York, ECOSOC Chamber on 25 November (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.), will offer an opportunity for Member States, regional organizations and civil society to share messages of solidarity with the Palestinian people.

International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2024; November 29th.

FORUM:"Let us reaffirm our commitment to upholding the rights of the Palestinian people and to building a future of peace." International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2024.The International Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1977 to highlight the ongoing struggle of the Palestinian people for self-determination and independence. Observed annually on November 29th, this date was chosen because it marks the anniversary of the UN's adoption of Resolution 181 in 1947, which proposed the partition of Palestine into two states—one Arab and one Jewish. While this resolution led to the creation of the State of Israel, the establishment of a Palestinian state has yet to be realized, highlighting the continued challenges faced by Palestinians. By dedicating this day to solidarity, the United Nations aims to draw international attention to the rights of the Palestinian people and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The day serves as a reminder to the global community of its responsibility to support efforts towards achieving a just and lasting peace.

Statement of the United Nations Secretary-General on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2024; November 29th.

Every year on this day, the international community stands in solidarity for the dignity, rights, justice and self-determination of the Palestinian people. This year’s commemoration is especially painful as those fundamental goals are as distant as they have ever been.

Nothing justifies the 7 October terror attacks by Hamas and the taking of hostages. And nothing justifies the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.

Yet, more than a year later, Gaza is in ruins, more than 43,000 Palestinians – mostly women and children – have been reportedly killed, and the humanitarian crisis is getting worse by the day. This is appalling and inexcusable.

Meanwhile, in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, Israeli military operations, settlement expansion, evictions, demolitions, settler violence and threats of annexation are inflicting further pain and injustice.

It is past time for an immediate ceasefire and the unconditional release of all hostages; an end to the unlawful occupation of the Palestinian Territory – as confirmed by the International Court of Justice and the General Assembly; and irreversible progress towards a two-State solution, in line with international law and relevant UN resolutions – with Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace and security, and Jerusalem as the capital of both States.

As a matter of urgency, I appeal for full support of lifesaving humanitarian relief for the Palestinian people – in particular through the work of UNRWA, which represents an irreplaceable lifeline for millions of Palestinians.

The United Nations will continue to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their inalienable rights to live in peace, security and dignity.

United Nations Secretary-General.

International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2023; November 29th.

The Solidarity Day provides an opportunity for the international community to focus its attention on the fact that the question of Palestine remains unresolved and that the Palestinian people are yet to attain their inalienable rights as defined by the General Assembly, namely, the right to self-determination, the right to national independence and sovereignty and the right to return. Statement from the United Nations Secretary-General on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2023; November 29th.

This International Day of Solidarity comes during one of the darkest chapters in the history of the Palestinian people. I am horrified by the death and destruction that have engulfed the region, which is overwhelmed with pain, anguish and heartache.

Palestinians in Gaza are suffering a humanitarian catastrophe. Almost 1.7 million people have been forced from their homes – but nowhere is safe. Meanwhile, the situation in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, risks boiling over.

I express my sincere condolences to the thousands of families who are mourning loved ones. This includes members of our own United Nations family killed in Gaza, representing the largest loss of personnel in the history of our organization.

I have been clear in my condemnation of the terror attacks by Hamas on 7 October. But I have also been clear that they cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people.

Across the region, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency is an indispensable lifeline, delivering vital support to millions of Palestinian refugees. It is more important than ever that the international community stands with UNRWA as a source of support for the Palestinian people.

Above all, this is a day for reaffirming international solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to live in peace and dignity.

That must start with a long-term humanitarian ceasefire, unrestricted access for lifesaving aid, the release of all hostages, the protection of civilians and an end to violations of international humanitarian law. We must be united in demanding an end to the occupation and the blockade of Gaza.

It is long past time to move in a determined, irreversible way towards a two-State solution, on the basis of United Nations resolutions and international law, with Israel and Palestine living side-by-side in peace and security with Jerusalem as the capital of both States.

The United Nations will not waver in its commitment to the Palestinian people. Today and every day, let us stand in solidarity with the aspirations of the Palestinian people to achieve their inalienable rights and build a future of peace, justice, security and dignity for all.

International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2015, November 29th.

اليوم العالمي للتضامن مع الشعب الفلسطيني 29 نوفمبر تشرين الثاني.
International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People,  29 November.

This year’s observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People falls at a time when security and hope are at a low point.
A wave of violence has included heinous attacks, stabbings, shootings and vehicular attacks causing immense suffering among Israeli and Palestinian families alike.  I condemn such attacks and all acts of violence.  Illegal settlement activities and settler-related violence have continued, along with punitive demolitions of Palestinian-owned homes and structures.
The tensions related to the Holy Sites in the Old City of Jerusalem have introduced a troubling and dangerous religious dimension to the conflict.  During my visit to the region last month, I stressed the need to preserve the status quo at the Haram al Sharif/Temple Mount, in line with the agreements between Israel and Jordan and with respect to the special role of His Majesty the King of Jordan, as Custodian.  I welcome Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s repeated assurances that Israel has no intention of changing the status quo; this commitment needs to be accompanied by actions to defuse the situation and restore confidence.
It is crucial that leaders on both sides play a constructive role towards resolving the conflict. Both sides must reject incitement and inflammatory public statements.
Recognizing the security challenges Israel faces, I nonetheless remind Israeli authorities that the use of force, if not properly calibrated, feeds anger and frustration.  I urge Israeli security services to exercise maximum restraint, particularly in the use of lethal force.
Palestinians feel deep frustration over an occupation that has lasted nearly 50 years.  Israelis fear deeply for their security.  The lack of a political horizon to achieve the two-State solution risks allowing the situation to spiral out of control.
The international community can and must play a greater role to break the impasse.  The Middle East Quartet continues its efforts to preserve the viability of a Palestinian State and establish conditions for a return to meaningful negotiations.
On 29 November 2012, the State of Palestine joined the United Nations as a “non-Member observer State”. Today, 136 countries recognize the State of Palestine and its flag flies at the United Nations next to those of all Member States.  However, these advances are not felt by children in Gaza, or by the residents of Nablus, Hebron and East Jerusalem.  What they feel instead is a lack of hope that their lives will change for the better and that they will be citizens of a State able to ensure their freedom and well-being through peace with their neighbours.
On this International Day of Solidarity, let us reaffirm our commitment to bring about the just peace that the peoples of Israel and Palestine deserve.
