Scientifically validated research demonstrates its profound impact on neuroplasticity, stress reduction, emotional regulation, and overall cognitive functioning. By fostering inner peace through meditation, individuals contribute to building a more resilient and sustainable world for current and future generations. STATEMENTS:

Statement of the United Nations Secretary-General on International Migrants Day 2024; December 18th.

On International Migrants Day, we celebrate the contributions millions of migrants make to communities, economies and countries around the world. But today is also a day to remind ourselves of the challenges migrants can face — from prejudice and discrimination, to outright violence and abuse, to the unimaginable cruelty of human trafficking. These challenges are made worse by the rising tide of mis and disinformation and hate speech which sows division and distorts the valuable contributions migrants are making each and every day. As a global community, we must summon our common humanity, and work to reverse these harmful trends. The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, adopted six years ago, provides concrete solutions to protect migrants at every step of their journeys and continue expanding rights-based pathways for migration. And through the recently adopted Pact for the Future, the countries of the world re-committed to strengthening international partnerships and global cooperation for safe, orderly and regular migration. Today and every day, let’s stand up for the rights of all migrants and work to create safe, humane and inclusive migration.

United Nations Secretary-General.

Statement of Ms. Amy Pope, IOM Director-General on International Migrant’s Day 2024; December 18th.

Today, we proudly celebrate International Migrants Day. This day gives us a special opportunity to shine a spotlight on the invaluable contributions of millions of migrants around the world. It's also a day for us to highlight the increasingly complex environment in which migration occurs. Conflicts, climate-related disasters and economic pressures continue to drive millions of people from their homes in search of safety or simply opportunity. This last year, we saw record levels of internal displacement, rising humanitarian needs across ongoing and new crises, and, tragically, the highest-ever death toll of migrants in transit. Yet alongside these challenges, are stories of resilience, progress and hope. Where safe and well-managed migration holds extraordinary potential. Migrants play critical roles in labor markets, filling skills gaps, driving innovation and entrepreneurship, and addressing demographic challenges in aging societies. Migrants boost economic growth and provide a lifeline to families and communities back home, driving development. To harness this potential and meet rising humanitarian needs worldwide, IOM is launching its Global Appeal for 2025. This vital funding will support IOM programming across more than 170 countries and territories, with a goal of reaching more than 101 million people. IOM’s work will continue to focus on our three key strategic objectives:
Saving lives and protecting people on the move; Driving solutions to displacement and supporting pathways for safe, regular and orderly migration. At IOM, we're committed to maximizing the impact of every dollar – improving efficiency, partnering locally, and leveraging data to better plan and respond to evolving needs. Together, we can continue building a world where migration is safe, orderly, and beneficial – for everyone.

Ms Amy Pope, IOM Director General.

Arabic Language Day 2024; December 18th.

Arabic Language and AI: Advancing Innovation While Preserving Cultural Heritage.

FORUM: “Arabic Language and AI: Advancing Innovation While Preserving Cultural Heritage.”. Arabic Language Day 2024. Arabic Language Day is celebrated every year on December 18th since 2012. The date coincides with the day in 1973 that the United Nations General Assembly adopted Arabic as the sixth official language of the Organization. The objectives of the U.N. Arabic Language Day is to promote equal use of all six official working languages throughout the organization and to celebrate multilingualism, as a core value, and cultural diversity. The celebration of the Arabic Language day aims to acknowledge the contribution of the 'Arabic language' in enriching science, philosophy, literature, art and universal culture. The day is also an opportunity to look into the status and the future of one of the most widely spoken languages across the globe. Follow the conversation with the hashtags: #ArabicLanguageDay, #18December, #Arabiclanguage, #Multilingualism.

On this World Arabic Language Day, we join the global community in observing one of humanity’s richest cultural and linguistic treasures. With its unmatched beauty, depth, and versatility, the Arabic language stands as a pillar of cultural diversity, connecting over 450 million speakers worldwide while embodying a heritage that transcends time and place.

Since its adoption as an official language of the United Nations in 1973, Arabic has continued to serve as a bridge across civilizations and cultures. Its profound contributions—spanning fields as diverse as philosophy, architecture, poetry, music, and science—reflect its role as a catalyst for knowledge and creativity. From preserving ancient sciences and philosophies that shaped the European Renaissance to fostering dialogue along the historic Silk Roads, Arabic remains central to humanity’s shared intellectual and artistic legacy.

This year, under the theme “Arabic Language and AI: Advancing Innovation While Preserving Cultural Heritage,” we reflect on the evolving role of Arabic in a rapidly changing digital landscape. While artificial intelligence and technological advancements offer opportunities to expand Arabic’s global presence, they also highlight the need to safeguard the language’s authenticity and heritage for future generations.

We are especially proud to commemorate this occasion alongside the Arab Divas Exhibition, held under the patronage of HRH Princess Rym and in collaboration with the Anna Lindh Foundation. Hosted in Jordan for the first time in the Middle East and uniquely curated in Arabic. This exhibition pays tribute to the iconic women whose artistry defined the Golden Era of Arab music and cinema. Through their powerful voices and timeless performances, legendary figures such as Oum Kalthoum, Fayrouz, and Dalida, among others, transformed the language into a unifying force that connects generations and preserves our cultural identity.

The Arab Divas Exhibition, housed at The Hangar Ras El Ain until February 20, 2025, celebrates these extraordinary artists as guardians of cultural heritage and showcases the enduring power of Arabic to inspire creativity and capture the universal human experience.

As we stand at the intersection of tradition and innovation, we reaffirm our shared commitment to preserving and promoting the Arabic language and its cultural expressions. By honoring its timeless beauty and embracing its future in the digital age, we ensure that Arabic continues to thrive—uniting hearts, minds, and generations across the globe.

International Day of Neutrality 2024; December 12th.

FORUM: “Promoting neutrality as an instrument of preventive diplomacy.” International Day of Neutrality 2024. Neutralism or a "neutralist policy" is a foreign policy position wherein a state intends to remain neutral in future wars. A sovereign state that reserves the right to become a belligerent if attacked by a party to the war is in a condition of armed neutrality. Neutrality has for decades dovetailed with “international activism” and the articulation of international law and collective action. The policy of neutrality contributes to strengthening global peace and security and plays an important role in forging peaceful, friendly and mutually beneficial relations between the countries of the world. Follow the conversation with the hashtags: #PreventiveDiplomacy, #NeutralityDay, #12December, #NeutralistPolicy, #Neutralism.

EVENTS: On December 12th, the United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations Security Council, and the United Nations Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs the UNRWA and other specialized agencies will observe the International Day of Neutrality 2024 at UNHQ to discuss the principles of Neutrality. Neutrality is understood to mean that “humanitarian actors must not take sides in hostilities or engage in controversies of a political, racial, religious, or ideological nature”. Neutrality is much more than an abstract principle, however. International humanitarian organizations often operate in volatile contexts – 60 per cent of students at UNRWA schools have lived through conflict – and neutrality helps to create what is termed “humanitarian space”. By upholding neutrality and working with the sole goal of alleviating suffering wherever it is found, humanitarian organizations can continue their crucial work. For example, neutrality is essential for the Agency to access its beneficiaries and provide them with crucial aid and to communicate with all parties to ensure that its buildings are not affected during times of hostilities or armed violence. Neutrality also enables Humanitarian agencies to work with host governments to import medicines for its clinics and to secure visas for staff to enable them to carry out their professional duties. These illustrations 6 Staff conduct and neutrality), (Infrastructure Installations and neutrality), (Vetting), (Peace Education and Neutrality) are just a snapshot explaining the crucial importance of neutrality for UNRWA operations as a humanitarian actor.

International Universal Health Coverage Day 2024; December 12th.

FORUM: "Health: it's on the government!" International Universal Health Coverage Day 2024. The high cost of health services is the primary reason people miss out on essential health care. These costs often force families to choose between paying for medicines or a visit to the doctor and other necessities, such as food, housing and education. Health costs and illness should never push people into poverty. Investing in universal health coverage and financial protection not only enhances health and well-being but also fosters greater equity and social cohesion. When populations are healthy, communities and economies prosper. That is why we call on decision makers around the world to protect people from financial hardship when accessing health services. It is the responsibility of governments to ensure that healthcare is always affordable or free, particularly for the poorest and most vulnerable among us. Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day 2024 will focus on the role of financial protection in accelerating progress towards UHC. Financial protection ensures that people don’t fall into poverty because of having to pay out-of-pocket for health costs. Over the last 20 years, financial protection has progressively deteriorated, with 2 billion people experiencing financial hardship and 1.3 billion people pushed into poverty due to health spending. This means that mothers may miss out on the life-saving intervention they need for themselves or their children, people are not diagnosed and treated for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) on time, with delays in early treatment leading to severe, untreatable or life-threatening illnesses. Healthier populations build communities that are more resilient, productive, peaceful and prosperous. Health for all is a pre-requisite to achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs). In spite of numerous high-level political commitments to achieve UHC by 2030, over half of the world’s population still has no access to essential health services. UHC will remain elusive until governments adequately invest in protecting people – particularly the most vulnerable among us – from impoverishing health spending. This UHC Day, WHO calls for urgent action to put financial protection measures in place. Join us in starting discussions and taking action to make financial protection and #HealthForAll a reality. This year, UHC Day presents an opportunity to revitalize commitments towards accelerating UHC. International Mountain Day 2024; December 11th.

FORUM: “Mountain solutions for a sustainable future – innovation, adaptation and youth.” International Mountain Day 2024. Over centuries, mountain communities have developed solutions to adapt to their harsh environments, deal with climate change, reduce poverty and protect or restore biodiversity and ecosystems in mountain regions. This year’s celebration aims to focus on innovative solutions, fostering adaptation strategies and empowering youth for a sustainable future. Innovation is essential for addressing complex mountain-related issues. It encompasses technological advancements, such as digital solutions for monitoring and conservation, as well as creative problem-solving such as climate-smart agriculture and novel approaches to livelihoods, resource management and financing. As climate change exacerbates environmental pressures on mountains, adaptation becomes imperative for building resilience and reducing vulnerability. Adaptation strategies tailored to mountain ecosystems and communities include solutions such as ecosystem-based approaches to disaster risk reduction and the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems. The active, meaningful and inclusive participation of youth in decision-making is essential for ensuring the long-term sustainability of mountain solutions. Young people are committed to climate action, gender equality, social justice, innovation, the promotion of culture, and inclusion. The celebration of the IMD 2024 promotes decent work and quality employment for young persons, universal and accessible training, and entrepreneurship opportunities that contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of mountain resources. The International Mountain Day 2024 is a platform for exchanging knowledge, showcasing best practices and mobilizing collective action. By embracing innovation, adaptation, youth empowerment, and collaborative approaches, we can pave the way for a more sustainable and resilient future for mountain communities and ecosystems. While "Mountain solutions for a sustainable future – innovation, adaptation and youth" is the suggested theme for 2024, countries, communities and organizations are welcome to celebrate IMD through a theme that is more relevant to them. This year’s theme was selected to fully include mountains in the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021–2030, co-led by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the UN Environment Programme. The Decade is an opportunity to draw together political support, scientific research and financial resources to significantly scale-up restoration and prevent further degradation of mountain ecosystems. The United Nations General Assembly also recently proclaimed 2023–2027 as “Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions” in its triennial resolution on sustainable mountain development. Its objectives are to attract grant assistance and investments for mountains, develop “green” economies and technologies, create mechanisms to strengthen cooperation between mountainous countries, and develop science and education in the field of sustainable mountain development. The celebration of the International Mountain Day 2023 is a chance to increase awareness about the relevance of mountain ecosystems and call for nature-based solutions, best practices and investments that build resilience, reduce vulnerability and increase the ability of mountains to adapt to daily threats and extreme climatic events. Human rights impact everyone, every day and in this campaign, Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now, we will show the tangible impact of human rights by focusing on relevant global issues, showcasing impact, successes and practical solutions.

Statement of the United Nations Secretary-General on Human Rights Day 2024; December 10th.

On Human Rights Day, we face a harsh truth. Human rights are under assault. Tens of millions of people are mired in poverty, hunger, poor health and education systems that have not yet fully recovered from the COVID‑19 pandemic. Global inequalities are running rampant. Conflicts are intensifying. International law is wilfully ignored. Authoritarianism is on the march while civic space is shrinking. Hateful rhetoric is fuelling discrimination, division and outright violence. And women’s rights continue to be rolled back in law and practice.

This year’s theme reminds us that human rights are about building the future — right now. All human rights are indivisible. Whether economic, social, civic, cultural or political, when one right is undermined, all rights are undermined.

We must stand up for all rights — always. Healing divisions and building peace. Tackling the scourges of poverty and hunger. Ensuring healthcare and education for all. Advancing justice and equality for women, girls and minorities. Standing up for democracy, press freedoms and workers’ rights. Promoting the right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment. And defending human rights defenders as they carry out their vital work.

The recently adopted Pact for the Future reinforced the world’s commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

On this important day, let’s protect, defend and uphold all human rights for all people.

International Anti-Corruption Day 2024; December 9th.

FORUM: "Uniting with Youth Against Corruption: Shaping Tomorrow's Integrity." International Anti-Corruption Day 2024. The theme will underscore the vital role of young people in driving change, promoting transparency and building a future rooted in integrity. Young people have dreams and aspirations, but corruption erodes the fabric of society, stifles progress and deprives them of educational opportunities, job prospects, engagement in public life, success in sports and access to healthcare and other essential services. Additionally, it contributes to environmental degradation and climate destruction. Our world confronts numerous challenges, tragedies, inequalities and injustices, many of which are tied to corruption. With 1.9 billion young people in the world, fighting corruption is vital for the future of nearly a quarter of the global population. While young people are significantly affected by corruption, they also have the potential to become powerful agents of change in the fight for a future rooted in integrity. Young people must demand accountability and actively participate in anti-corruption efforts. To effectively promote a culture of integrity across the public and private sectors and build a generation that stands up to corruption, education is key. It teaches values of transparency, accountability and integrity from an early age. By promoting integrity and ethical behaviour within their social circles and challenging small-scale corruption at the community level, young people can drive meaningful change. Additionally, they can develop innovative solutions to address corruption on a global scale. Tech-savvy youth can leverage technologies such as blockchain, AI, online platforms, social media and innovative apps to enhance transparency, increase access to information and create tools that facilitate anonymous reporting of corrupt practices. We must actively listen to young people, as their ideas today may hold the key to the best solutions for combating corruption and strengthening integrity tomorrow. Young integrity leaders play a vital role in advocating for dismantling institutional structures that enable corruption, pushing for greater transparency and accountability. Through active participation and reforms, they help create corruption-resilient institutions that reject unethical behaviour. Addressing corruption leads to a fairer, more transparent society where young individuals have equal opportunities to achieve their dreams. This effort builds trust in institutions and inspires the next generation to actively contribute to creating a better future. Young people have a clear vision and innovative ideas for a future free from corruption. We must give them a seat at the table, listen to their voices, and involve them in the process. By empowering youth to actively engage and help lead future anti-corruption efforts, we can create lasting change. Building a just world and a sustainable planet is only possible if corruption doesn’t stand in the way. United, we can combat corruption. International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime 2024; December 9th.

FORUM: "Remembrance and Prevention: The role of commemoration and memory for the prevention of Genocide." International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime 2024. Commemoration and memorialization initiatives are inextricably linked to the two obligations set forth by the Genocide Convention, namely, the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide. By promoting truth-telling and healing, fostering a culture of peace education, social cohesion and respect for diversity, keeping a record of the past and collecting testimonies of victims and survivors, establishing and maintaining archives, and contributing to reducing instances of genocide denial and glorification of war criminals, such efforts significantly contribute to the implementation of these two key obligations. The need to invest in genocide prevention, as envisaged by the Genocide Convention drafters 76 years ago remains as relevant as ever. This year's mark the 76th anniversary of the Genocide Convention, the day seeks to highlight achievements that emanate from the Convention, to showcase its legacy, and also reflect on the challenges that remain for its effective implementation. Around the world, populations remain at risk of this crime. The need to invest in prevention as envisaged by the Convention drafters 75 years ago remains as relevant as ever. This year’s event takes place in between two landmark commemorations. In April 2024, Rwanda marked 30 years since the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi. In July 2025, Bosnia and Herzegovina will mark 30 years since the 1995 Srebrenica genocide. Thus, the event will be dedicated to the role of commemoration and memorialization efforts not only to honor the victims and survivors of genocide, but also as effective mechanisms for the prevention of future genocides. It will focus on the experiences of Rwanda and Bosnia and Herzegovina to explore the ways in which commemoration and memory of past genocides serve as an essential component of prevention. STATEMENT: Read the Statement of United Nations Secretary-General on the International Day of Commemoration & Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide & the Prevention of this Crime 2024; December 9th.

Today marks the 76th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

Adopted in the wake of the unimaginable horrors of the Holocaust, the Convention is a pledge to the victims and survivors of genocide to ensure that these atrocities never occur again.

Tragically, in a world plagued by division, mistrust and violence, the dark spectre of genocide is still with us.

In the name of the victims and survivors of genocide, all governments must ratify and fully implement the Convention, holding perpetrators to account.

We must strengthen the tools of prevention, including education and countering mis- and disinformation that can fuel hate speech and genocidal intent and action.

We must respect and implement decisions of the International Court of Justice on the application of the Convention.

And we must do everything possible to identify early warning signs and sound the alarm.

The best way to honour the victims and survivors of genocide is to ramp up action to prevent this atrocious crime.
